Woo-Hoo, Sock Completed! 28 Apr 06

“I’m so excited, and I just can’t hide it! I know, I know, I know, I know, I finished one sock, one sock!” -Pointer Sisters (with liberal adaptions :))

And it actually fits! The only thing I should have done is make the cuff longer, but I got impatient with it. I really like the colors, and it’s very comfy, not to mention warm! I noticed it’s a lot warmer than my standard cotton socks. And I’ve cast on for the 2nd sock, using magic loop this time, and I like it a lot more. It’s just so much faster, especially since the loops are flexible and there’s no poking :) And I splurged on some Addi Turbos, and boy are those puppies quick! So I’m hoping to have this sock done a lot sooner (the 1st one took me forever). I’m starting to understand the appeal of sock knitting, it can be quite enjoyable.

In other knitting news, Scout opened a shop online! All her sweet sock yarn is gone now, but I’m sure she’s dyeing away like mad. It’s like your friendly LYS, but online! (wow, that’s quite a cliche’d sentence) So go buy some yarn when there’s more, I sure will!

Finally, there are only 4 more days of class!!! Next Friday I will be free! And then in only one week, I’ll be wearing a cap and gown and walking down the lawn at Brown Hall. Yippee! Then I won’t have to squat here in the EE lab and listen to the Lab TA suck his girlfriend’s lips off all morning. Gross!

So I spent a good amount of time today in Village Wools, chilling with Jamie and all the crew there, and it was a lot of fun! I really do enjoy spending my Saturday afternoons in the yarn shop :) I was trying to decide what to knit next since I’m almost done with my laptop bag, and I was wanting to do some felted moccasins from my Felted Knits book, but Jamie was really encouraging me to do socks, so I took her advice, sort of. She helped me decide to do this pattern for felted sock/slippers from knitty, called Fuzzy Feet.

Really all the pattern is are two really big socks that are knit with big needles, and then felted to size. So it’s a good way to learn sock techniques, without having to start with sock yarn and size 0 needles, which was a bit daunting. Also, Noelle was there too, and she helped me pick out some sweet tweed yarn, since she’s made a bunch of Fuzzy Feet before. So I’m very excited to get started on these tonight, and see how far I can get. Jamie thinks I’m going to be done by the end of the evening, but I’m not so sure, since I think my family is getting ready to leave to take an expedition to Trader Joes for the evening, and buy some cheap organic food.

At any rate, I’m looking forward to the Fuzzy Feet, and my little brother really wants me to knit him a pair too, so I will get lots of practice :) I also finished the new handle and shoulder strap for my laptop bag, and am planning to sew on the shoulder strap tonight. I’m still not sure about the pocket, because I dont’ know if I want my bulky power adapter right up against the small of my back when I’m carrying the bag, so I need to make a decision on that too.

Well I’m off to cast-on for the Fuzzy Feet, so peace out!

I’m really excited, because tonight my Mom and I are going over to a family friend’s house, who I’ve been helping to learn to knit. She even gave me her first scarf! (It looked a lot better than my first scarf ;)) She’s invited us over tonight for dinner and knitting, like a mini SnB group. It should be a lot of fun!

Also, the pattern is now up, so go grab that puppy and get to work! There’s still some work to be done on the pattern, since I’m still finishing up the button closure, shoulder strap, etc. But most of it is up, so enjoy! Sorry that the gauge section is long and drawn out, but I really feel that it’s the most important part of the project. Be sure to leave any comments you have, whether it be suggestions, or you just can understand what I’m trying to say. And be sure to send me pictures of your bag if you make one!

Pattern Forthcoming 06 Mar 06

Hey there everyone, I’ve received a few requests for the pattern for my laptop bag, and I would like to let you know that it is going to be released here on my blog in the next few days. I was originally going to submit it to Knitty, but a commenter pointed out that Knitty only accepts patterns that have never been posted about before, so I guess I’ll just have to release it to you, the public.

Anyhoo, it should be up soon, and I’d like to do a kind of online interactive thing where people can submit me their variations on the pattern and I’ll incorporate them into a kind of online laptop bag knowledgebase, where people can pick the pattern that works best for them. I’m even going to include some kind of online gauge calculator, where you can put in your results from swatching and it will spit out how big you need to make the bag. I want to be sure to include those who are swatch-phobic and don’t have the love for math that I do :)

So, Scout met me in the shop yesterday to help me pick out some rovings and teach me how to needle felt, and that started me on an awesome trip wherein I learned that, needle felting is like the coolest thing I’ve ever done! So this post will be long, so I’m going to give you a teaser picture and make you click through to view the final product, and I must say, it rocks!!!
