Hobbit Feet 05 Oct 06

Comments

In honor of Socktoberfest 2006, here’s my history of sock knitting! And there’s lots more sock fun to come this month, as I pretty much always have a pair on the needles!

When did you start making socks? Did you teach yourself or were you taught by a friend or relative?

I started knitting socks back in March of 2006. I was at Village Wools one Saturday and both Scout and Noelle were there. (I think that was the first time I met Noelle come to think of it!) I said something about wanting to tackle socks next, and they both turned me onto the Fuzzy Feet pattern from Knitty. It looked like a great way to learn how to make a sock without the whole tiny needles and small yarn thing. So I braved the whole DPN thing and dove right in. I made one pair, and then one more for my brother, since he loved them so much! I still have my original pair, and wear them around the house all the time, they’re so comfy.

What was your first pair? How have they “held up” over time?

My first pair of “real socks” came about a month later, but not without lots of frustration. I used some Jacquard Jawool (the cheapest sock yarn in the LYS, since I was still a poor college student) and #2 Bamboo DPNs. After all my history with swatching, for some reason I decided that gauge didn’t matter for this project. Like so many people, I was in complete denial until the end. My Mom kept saying, “that looks really big…”, but I’d say “nah, it just looks that way on the needles.” Well, when it finally came time to graft the toe, I came to my senses. I had made a sock for a hobbit!

Now I’ve been told by many people that I have hobbit feet, but that’s mostly because of the sheer amount of hair on my feet (I know TMI, but this is why you’ll never see my naked feet on this blog. :-P), not because of their size. So that sock got frogged. And then, as if one huge gauge error wasn’t enough, I thought that the sock would fit better if I used size 0 needles and 60 stitches versus 72. At least that time I only made it through half the sock before realizing I was an idiot. So after frogging 2 socks, I was nearing the breaking point, but decided to try once more. I swatched and measured, and voila! The sock fit! And thus my first pair was born.

As far as wear and tear, they’ve held up pretty well, but there are a few spots on the soles where the yarn is wearing thin. Most of this is from walking on dirty brick floors, but I do prefer working with sport weight sock yarn rather than fingering weight.

socks, yarn and beer = great evening!
celebrating my first pair, finally!

What would you have done differently?

Swatched, most definitely. I have swatched every single project since that first pair. Let that be a lesson to you.

What yarns have you particularly enjoyed?

I’ve used only 3 sock yarns, all with their pros and cons:

  1. Jacquard Jawool: Relatively Inexpensive, Not all that durable, and the nylon seems to wear out which causes glitter like specks
  2. Lion Brand Magic Stripes: Very cheap, but a bit stiff and itchy.
  3. My own Hand-Dyed Superwash Merino: I just started a pair with a skein that I saved for testing (won’t sell it if I don’t like it is my philosophy). It’s very very soft and a nice change from the Lion Brand. And this stuff is my speedy yarn, at 6 stitches / inch on #4’s, socks go pretty fast.

I certainly have plenty in my stash that I need to use up, including a skein of another bargain yarn from the craft store, my yarn from Dye-O-Rama and a skein of Cherry Tree Hill. I’m hoping to maybe shrink down my sock yarn stash during Socktoberfest, cause then I’d just have to restock…possibly with some Socks that Rock. Ahem.

What method do you like for knitting socks? And what heel do you prefer?

I’m definitely in love with magic loop. I used DPN’s for the first pair, but wasn’t a huge fan of the whole 8,000 needles thing. I’m also just started knitting my socks toe-up, and it’s pretty much revolutionized my sock knitting. The whole top-down thing doesn’t do it for me, I really like to knit from the bottom up with a short-row heel.

How many pairs have you made?

Not counting fuzzy feet, I’ve made 3 pairs of socks so far, all for myself. But I’m working on Christmas Socks for the family now, so I’m becoming more philanthropic in my sock knitting. Although it’s difficult to part with knitted objects that require so much time, and are just so comfy!

Well, that’s my sock knitting history, and some information about my feet that you probably never wanted to know! There’ll be lots more sock knitting coming, especially since tomorrow night is the 2 HOUR BATTLESTAR GALACTICA PREMIERE!!! (Can you tell I’m freaking out over this?) Monica? I won’t spill the beans, but you have to hurry up and catch up, since I don’t have anyone else to nerd out with over this show!

And Stephanie? Congratulations on getting married, and at least making it a legally binding heathen union.

Ok, I’ve had way too much coffee and so I’m going to exit with some dignity before I spew out some more exclamation points like an excited fanboy. Ha! Who am I kidding? We’re getting an Apple Store in Albuquerque! The rumor is finally confirmed!!! I’m already promising you that I will be camping out there overnight when it opens, so stay tuned for that sometime in the future. OMG!

(Please forgive me for all the exclamation points, or just club me with a blunt object)

So I finally got my act together and took pictures of my newly dyed yarn, but before getting to see those, you have to sit through my diatribe on my dyeing methods :-P

So far when dyeing yarn, I like to do immersion dyeing on the stovetop because it’s easy to control the color and not very messy. But the problem I seem to run into is the tradeoff between tieing the yarn after it’s been wrapped on the warping board, and achieving even dyeing results. After a few incidents involving tangling (which we will not speak of), I became ultra paranoid and started wrapping each subskein with about 85 ties to make sure they stayed in place. Well this leads to the dye not absorbing evenly because the yarn isn’t left to flow freely in the dye solution, so sometimes the areas under the ties even stay white. I have yet to come up with the perfect solution, but I have a few ideas and have reached somewhat of a compromise.

I got the best results when I tied the yarn in less places and very loosely. Then after it’s rinsed, I straightened out each subskein and tied the crap out of it. This helped with getting the dry yarn arranged on the warping board for winding. That’s my solution so far…but do you have any experience or advice that you’d like to pass along? Leave a comment and let me know.

So without further ado, I present my latest colorways!

First up is Tie-Dyed, which is literally named because this is the first skein I dyed, and the ties were way too tight. I dyed it in a deep purple, green and blue, but the sections where the cotton ties were didn’t really dye at all. I was somewhat saddened about this, until I realized that it actually looked pretty cool. Mom said that it reminded her of a Tie-Dye T-Shirt, so the name stuck!

Then we have **New Mexico Sunset**, which is my absolute favorite of this dyeing session. I used Burnt Orange, Aztec Gold and Fire Red together to create a very brilliant skein that reminds me of our gorgeous sunsets here in NM. It wasn’t until later that I realized that I subconsciously dyed the skein of yarn that I hinted Scout about a few months ago. I had said I’d love a skein that looked like the NM flag with yellow and red, and well here it is! I especially love how the white sections that weren’t immersed and just soaked up dye turned a slight pink, which is what the sunset does too.

Lastly, we have a skein colored by my Mom. She picked her favorite colors and I set off to work. The resulting skein is very pretty and subdued, with light pink, lilac and spring green. It’s called Easter Eggs, and I think it came out great :)

I’m going to have a hard time selling these yarns at the craft fair, because I’m so attached to them! And I’m planning to have another dye session tonight to dye one more skein of Kona Superwash and 2 skeins of Licorice Twist. Wish me luck!

The Mystery Revealed! 21 May 06

Alright, after making quite a mess in the late hours last night, I have some sweet yarn to show off! May I offically present my first self-striping colorway, named:

3.6 kΩ Resistor!
For the un-EE’s out there, you can check out this link on resistor color coding. A resistor is an electrical device that basically limits or controls the flow of current in a circuit, kinda of like a pipe with rocks in it to slow down water. And since they’re small, and look all alike, they put color bands on them so you can figure out the actual value of resistance, measured in Ω’s. You can see the colors that inspired the name, and the colors I striped the yarn with in this photo:

Overall the yarn came out pretty good. I used Jacquard Ecru for the cream color, which didn’t exactly turn out like I wanted. And I got a bit of color cross over on the ecru, because it took any accidental touches of the other dark colors very easily. But it looks pretty cool, and I think it’ll make a nice pair of socks. Now I just need to make a warping board, so it’s not such an arduous process next time. (You should have seen it, it took like an hour to get it untangled…I didn’t tie it off too well so it got very tangled.) Here’s a few pictures of the yarn lounging out in the garden.

don’t laugh at the raffia, I don’t know how to do one of those twisted skein things.

Also, there’s 2 new sets on my flickr photostream: 3.6 kΩ Yarn! and garden season 2006, so go check them out!

Next in my dyeing future will be to make some sweet yarn for my Dye-O-Rama Pal, and then I’m dreaming of a new colorway, called Printed Circuit Board. :)

Dye-o-Meme-a-Rama! 17 May 06

So I’ve been a slacker and I was looking through my e-mails and realized that I hadn’t posted the Dye-O-Rama Meme yet! Oops! I suppose in all the confusion I completely forgot that I get to start teaching myself some yarn dyeing skills soon, so I can send someone some sweet hand-dyed yarn. I think I’m going to use my day off this Friday to spend some time at Village Wools stocking up on the necessary tools and mess making equipment.

Anyway, the meme’s kinda long, so continue on if you dare…Muhahaha!

GRE = p0w3nd! 29 Apr 06

I totally kicked the GRE’s butt today, and I’m pretty psyched about that. I got well above the minimum scores to get into UNM, and am very pleased with the results. I suppose all those times I risked my life by reviewing flash cards while driving really paid off ;) Also, we had our final senior design presentations yesterday and that went really well too. My teammate who usually freaks out (she forgot my name during the last presentation) actually did very well and kept her composure, and everyone else in our group did well too.

And the official countdown is: only 4 days of classes left! I can’t believe that in one week I’ll have completed 4 years of college education. I really not to think about it too hard, I might explode or something, and that would be unfortunate.

So to relax a little bit after the GRE today, Mom and I headed out to Village Wools and I helped her pick out some new yarn for a this really cool garden purse. She wanted a small summery bag to carry around, and since she’s the gardening queen, we thought it was perfect. Scout helped convince her too :)

Anyway, that’s about all there is to report…I’m still chugging along on my 2nd sock, at a much higher rate of speed now, thanks to the magic loop technique. I’m hoping to finish that soon, so that I can start on my Topi, cause I’m excited to do that project.

Well, I’m off to go listen to some live music at Alibi’s Spring Crawl now! And to round off the post, here’s an old picture of me and Emma, it’s one of my favorites :)
