The World Can Wait…But I Can’t! 26Oct06

Someone pinch me. Seriously, I really think I’m dreaming. I keep checking my e-mail inbox, just to make sure that 2 very special e-mails are still there, and that what they promise is in fact real. What 2 e-mails could possibly have me so worked up you say? Well, one is a confirmation for a flight to Chicago, and one is a confirmation for a ticket to the Over The Rhine concert in said city in early December.

While this may seem somewhat inconsequential to you, I promise, this will be a life changing concert. Over The Rhine is one of my favorite bands of all time, and I’ve been trying to go see them for around 4 years now, but it’s never worked out. So when I found out that they were playing in one of my favorite cities on the day after my birthday, well I just had to go. I still have been unable to console my wallet, which is still sitting in the corner sobbing at being violated in such a manner. But who cares?! Cause, (cue music) it’s my birthday and I’ll go if I want to! (end music)

Alright, let’s move onto the knitting content, since that’s what you really came here for. I finished my 2nd pair of Socktoberfest socks, which will be a gift for an un-named family member. Although they are so comfortable that I really want to keep them for myself…so I buried them under lots of yarn, in hopes that I’ll forget about them until Christmas. I made them exactly the same as this pair of socks, so you can check that post for the details. The yarn is my own 2400 MHz Merino Superwash, in a colorway called Steelcut Oats.

I’m also progressing quickly on the project that shall not be named, especially since it’s been a homework free week. It’s quite nice to have entire evenings to sit at home and knit; too bad that homework gets in the way of that most of the time (who am I kidding? I totally knit instead of doing homework all the time…) I also may have cough cast-on for a Backyard Leaves scarf with some lovely Cascade 220 that I picked up at the new and improved Village Wools. (To all the VW Staff: You guys rock! And the new store is awesome!) I’m really getting bad at starting new projects whilst other ones are on the needles. I used to be so good about finishing something before starting a new project, but that’s eluded me lately.

You know what I just realized too? It’s almost one year since I learned to knit! I can’t remember the exact date, but it was definitely near the beginning of November last year. I’m working on a “Adam’s History in Knitting” post, and there will most likely be some contests, so stay tuned!

I’ll leave you with this lovely picture that I took the other night. My brother and his fiancee were hungry, and this giant bowl of salt-laced, heart exploding delicious beef ramen was what they cooked up. Oh to be young, in love, and have a heart unaffected by salt intake.

kinda looks like the dog food
that’s 3 packages of ramen, with added beef bouillion cubes, in case you wanted to know…so gross!

In case you were wondering, the aforementioned birthday is December 1. Send Yarn.

Finally, Peace and Quiet 03Aug06

In a very happy note, I’m glad to report that ACG (Annoying Cubicle Guy, Who Never Shuts Up) has completed his internship and just departed from our office, not to be heard from again. I thought he’d never leave! In honor of finally getting some peace and quiet in this barren land of partitions, I’ve made a list of some of the more memorable quotes uttered by ACG.

The other cast of characters include CBG (Cute Blond Girl, who is oblivious to the fact that annoying cubicle guy totally has the hots for her and constantly hits on her) and GMU (Grunting Mac User, who I think only comes in the office for like 2 hours a day, and mostly utters grunts and non-coherent noises).

  • Annoying Cubicle Guy: “Ambulance is a weird word. It sounds like a prescription drug, not a car.”

    Grunting Mac User: “Unggg.”

  • Cute Blond Girl: “Oh look, my computer has a blue screen with white words on it, what does that mean?”

Annoying Cubicle Guy: “Oh I’ve heard about that, and I think it’s a very serious problem, you may need a new computer. Better call Computer Support.”

    (5 minutes later)

Computer Support on Speakerphone: “Ummm, Windows does that all the time. Just reboot it. Bye.”

  • Annoying Cubicle Guy: “Well I guess this is goodbye. Good luck with school and all that.”

    Cute Blond Girl: “Tee-hee-hee!”

Annoying Cubicle Guy: “When you think of me, just throw stuff at the mountains, since that’s in the general direction of Georgia Tech.”

    Cute Blond Girl: “Sure!”

In knitting news, I’m going up to the mountains tonight to help Mom assemble the large collection of Noni Bags that she has amassed. Pictures forthcoming.

Singularity Theory 28Jul06

So last night I went to the Yarn Harlot Tour, to find more out about this mysterious genre known as “knitting humor”. I’ll have to admit, I’d never read any of Stephanie Pearl-McPhee’s books, and was somewhat skeptical about this supposed style of writing. I anticipated that going to a book signing about knitting humor, where the author gives a “comedy routine” as Scout put it, would be a little bit nerdy. I imagined that knitting humor would somewhat like nerdy engineering humor…you know like the joke we used to write on the board in physics class before the professor came in…

“E = mc3: Please don’t drink and derive.”

Now that’s kinda funny, if you’re really nerdy…and believe me I have like 50 of those jokes. But I decided to go to the signing and see if this knitting humor was really as funny as people say, and I was not let down. Stephanie was absolutely hilarious!!! Her insights into what it means to be a knitter, and what we look like to the “muggles” (nice appropriation of the term Stephanie :) ) when we sit around knitting furiously on something in public. Very funny stuff.

And at the end I got a new copy of Knitting Rules and Stephanie signed it. And guess what? She’s read my blog :) That made my night. So thanks Stephanie for a great evening.

I just hope that I represented Albuquerque male knitters well. (Seriously if there’s more of you, we need to have a knit and beer night, then maybe I wouldn’t be the single guy at these events…)

As far as knitting goes, I finished the cabled purse, and it looks awesome! The lining is a very nice silky purple material, and I think it came out great. Here’s some pictures:

I also finished my 30,000th Mason Dixon Dishrag while at the signing last night…they’re like crack I swear. Except they go one step further because they clean your counter, while real crack just makes a big mess everywhere. Not speaking from experience at all.

That’s about it for me, I’m just going to go enjoy my day off, eat some good Thai food for lunch, see a movie this evening, and probably stay up until the wee hours of the morning with a glass of wine and some knitting. Should be a wonderful day.
