Work and Rewards 23 Jan 07

First off. 24 last night? Did anyone else see it? OMG! Jack is so crazy! Anyway, if you want to discuss whether or not Jack Bauer is legally insane, then you should drop me a line with the contact form, rather than using the comments, so my readers who aren’t on Day 6 don’t tar and feather me. (come on peeps! hurry up!)

That aside, I really don’t have too much to report…school is in full swing, so I’m getting adjusted to my new schedule and trying to maintain my sanity quotient. It’s harder than it sounds. But whenever I may stay up too late trying to get things done, I always have these little clocks to keep me on the right sleep schedule.

sleepy time!
"come to bed papa! we’re sleepy!"

And yep, that’s Junior in the background. He’s still with me, although there’s a family coming to see him in a few days and I think he’s going to finally be adopted. It’s been more of a process because he’s older and deaf, but he’s a sweet guy and still deserves a good home.

Also, I’m at 19.6 miles for Runagogo, yeah! Last time I started running I didn’t make it this far, so I’m excited. I ran almost 3 miles last night, in the cold even! I went out at dusk and decided to just run in the neighborhood rather than deal with the gym lines, and I had a very nice time. I warmed up towards the end, and had some hot tea when I got home too. Not my favorite to run in the cold, but I was proud of myself for getting out there and getting it done. So to celebrate, I had a little reward tonight ;) Just a small one, I promise! (I even skipped the cone!)

I couldn't resist!

I guess that means I better run extra far tomorrow!

I figured it was high time for a knitting update since the last few posts have been about other things. This is still a knitting blog right? Ok, sweet, that’s good to know.

Anyway, I’m working on a Backyard Leaves Scarf as a gift, using Cascade 220 in a lovely green shade. I really can’t express how much I love Cascade 220, it’s my new basic worsted choice for everything. It felts great, knits up nicely, feels very soft, and it’s very affordable. Plus you don’t get all that mohair up your nose like when you use Lambs Pride.

Cascade 220 is totally the new Lambs Pride!

Ok, enough subliminal (well maybe not so much subliminal as blatant) advertising for Cascade. Onto the knitting!

Here’s the first half of the Backyard Leaves Scarf, being shown off by a very grumpy model. It’s really hard to find good models these days, they’re so demanding. I got this pattern from the Interweave Knits Holiday Day Issue, but it’s originally from the book Scarf Style. I really like this pattern, it’s easy enough to work and the results are beautiful. It’s worked in two identical halves that are then blocked and seamed together. I really love how the scarf splits and ends on two separate leaves at the bind off edge too.

"I hate you right now."
“I’m not being paid enough for this humiliation!”

We also have some more Cascade 220, in a nice brown color, that will be used to make another gift scarf. I’m not quite sure of what pattern to use, and this is where you come in. It’s going to be gifted to a guy, and I’m looking for a simple pattern that will pair nicely with this lovely yarn. Something that knits quickly would be a plus as well.

“Please Dad, just one bite?”

The standout in my mind is Hello Yarn’s Irish Hiking Scarf. I also love Grumperina’s new Shifting Sands pattern, but I think I would like to make that one for myself ;) What other guys scarf patterns do you know of? Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Lastly, I have a few more pieces of new stuff to show off. I just bought a GoKnit Pouch from Scout’s Swag and I love it! It’s the perfect little pouch to stick my knitting in to take on the go. My knitting currently resides in the front pocket of my backpack, where it routinely tangles with pencils, erasers, etc. It’ll be nice to have a separate bag to keep the knitting organized. And the pouch is built so nicely! If you don’t have one, you should seriously get one, they’re awesome.

There’s also a copy of Yarnplay, which I’m sure you’ve already heard of. It’s such a great book and has tons of neat and refreshing patterns. I especially love the Men’s sweater and the Copperhead Scarf. I contemplated the Copperhead pattern for the previously mentioned gift scarf, but I think the pattern is a bit too much for this particular person. That doesn’t take away from how great this book is though, seriously, get a copy!

That’s about it for me, see you next time!

Socks on a Dog 17 Sep 06

oh, the indignity!
“Dad, This is really embarassing.”

Well, errr, a sock I suppose. But nonetheless, it’s a sock, and an almost complete one at that (actually I just finished it and cast on for the 2nd one…cause otherwise I’d never do it…) I really am enjoying the whole toe-up thing, it’s nice to see the sock come along that way, and I used every last bit of yarn. This is the biggest sock I’ve ever done, but I’m really happy with it. It’s comfy, fun, and how can you not love a sock made with $3.99 clearance wool?

Oh, and Stephanie? Thanks for reminding me that the little black circle embedded in my laptop takes pictures. And not half bad ones compared to the crummy cameraphone. Although it is a bit difficult to take a nice picture with the laptop as you can’t see the screen too well when you point the camera away from you.

Alright, I’m an old man, and thus it’s my bedtime. And if I don’t post much this week…I’m not dead, I just have crazy amounts of homework and a big test coming up. So send happy test thoughts my way ok? And if you’re an expert on probability measure, set theory and the obfuscated mathematics that are Borel sets, I’ll pay you money to impart your wisdom to me. Really. (Or did I mention I can knit sweet socks?)

A Story of Grace 01 Sep 06

So this is a post I’ve been meaning to write for a while…it’s sad, and a bit long, but there’s definitely a happy ending. Continue on after the jump.

Today was a blast. Emma and I did our first major agility event, and it was so much fun. It was the 2006 Show N’ Go, put on by the Southwest Agility Team. It was just a fun event, no judging or scoring, but we got to run 2 different courses, and get a lot of good experience. Emma had a very good time, and so did I. I can’t wait until we start competing for real! Here’s a few pictures, one of Emma getting ready to run, and one of the course that she ran.

In other news, the house is done! I actually started parking my car in the garage yesterday, which was pretty cool. I feel a lot better now knowing that my car is safe from the freak hailstorms that seem to follow me around. And that means that I’ve been able to crank out a lot more knitting now that I’m not spending my evenings cleaning. Not that I wouldn’t do that if I could, since apparently that’s my new favorite past-time, at least that’s what my roomates think.

So I suppose I need to back up my claims of increased knitting with actual results. So here’s the obligatory pictures. I finished my first sock with the Smores yarn, and I also joined the Mason Dixon dishrag craze that seems to be sweeping the knitting blog world by storm. They’re really quite satisfying and quick to crank out.

Well, I better go because Mom (AKA the Knit Nazi…”More Knit for You!”) is pestering me to keep knitting so we have lots of stuff to sell at the artisan fair. Peace Out Knitters.
