What We’re Thankful For 23 Nov 06

Comments

Quite a lot actually! And here’s my chance to roll out my favorite blogging tool, the venerated and trusty list! So here’s (just a few of) the things I’m thankful for this year.

"papa, why do I have to do this?"
  1. My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It really boggles my mind that God would choose to love and have a relationship with me, but I’m really amazed by this constantly. Definitely something that I try to be thankful for at all times, but Thanksgiving is a good occassion to be reminded of how good God is to me. Even when things aren’t so good.

  2. My wonderful family! I love my entire family so much and I’m thankful that I have a close family, that I can share my hopes and dreams, as well as frustrations with. Thanks guys!

  3. My beloved dogs, Dallas and Emma. These two rambunctious puppies keep me both stressed and sane at all times of the day. They’re my constant companions and truest friends.

  4. Knitting. I would have never thought one year ago that something I had once considered a hobby for grandmothers would have changed my life so much. It’s so awesome to have an outlet for my creativity, frustrations and excitements. The process of knitting something from a skein of yarn still amazes me everytime.

  5. The Online Commu-knitty. Ok that was bad, sorry. Anyway, I love you guys! Knitting for me wouldn’t have become what is has without the support and encouragement of my fellow bloggers. The same can also be said of my yarn dyeing. Without people to encourage me and help me, and the wonderful people who have given my yarns a home, I wouldn’t have ever ventured down the road of dyeing. Thanks guys (and gals)!

give us a kiss!

Now, just to spice things up a bit, and to be a sentimental pet owner, here’s the list of what Dallas and Emma are thankful for.

  1. Both: That Dad promised to bring us some Turkey, Mashed Potatoes and Gravy home today! Yippee!

  2. Dallas: Dad just bought us a bunch of new toys! Emma: Except Dallas won’t quit hogging them! Quit it Dallas, Dad says you have to share!

  3. Dallas: That Dad hasn’t tried to knit us sweaters yet, thank goodness for that! Emma: Speak for yourself dork! I love to wear dog sweaters, since I’m always cold!

  4. Both: That Dad lets us sleep in the bed with him, since that floor is not comfy. It’s so much nicer under the covers, even if Dad does get frustrated when we hog the bed.

  5. Both: Did we mention we’re gonna have some turkey today???

Alright, I promised a post about my weekend, um, just after last weekend, but here it is now. Better late than never eh? So may I present the short photo essay, How I Spent My Saturday, by Adam Church.

Snake Proofing: Last Saturday was Dallas’ last week of Novice Class at Acoma, and every final week of Novice class involves snake proofing your dog. This might sound a bit strange, but basically the idea is to scare the crap out of your dog and create a link between their fear reaction and snakes. This comes in handy in NM, since you’re never too far from a rattlesnake. (My parents have lots of them on their land). And during snake proofing, we use real live bull snakes.

They let the dogs sniff the snake so that they become really curious, then they set your dog up. As you’re walking by, the trainer slides the snake out at you (while someone’s shaking a rattler in the background) and your job is to freak out and get your dog away from the snake as fast as possible. This involves lots of screaming, shouting and whatever else you need to do to make your dog afraid of that snake. This is a really effective training tool, and it’s saved many dogs and their owners lives, because your dog will warn you of snakes before you get bit. And it’s always interesting to throw 30 dogs and their owners into a room with bullsnakes. Alright, onto #2.

Dog Sitting: Also on Saturday, I was terrorized blessed by the company of all the family dogs at my house. That’s right, 5 Schnauzers, all at my house. You see, my parents had just put their house on the market, because they want to move somewhere a bit closer to my Dad’s job and Church, i.e. The West Side, dun-dun-dun! Anyway, they were out looking at houses that day, and there were people coming by to see their house, so I volunteered to watch all the dogs. Ha, was I ever crazy! For future reference, it’s not a good idea to take 3 dogs out of their comfort zone and put them in a backyard with a big puppy who just wants to play with them. Fighting will ensue. Nevertheless, I enjoyed having them all there, even if dinner time was a bit crazy…

the feeding frenzy. notice that cricket eats alone…
this is because she goes postal when any of the other dogs get near her food.

Baking: I did find some time to make some delicious cookies. Chocolate-Chocolate/Butterscotch Chip w/ Walnuts. Oh, man, they were amazing. I’ll write up the recipe sometime, cause oh man…

heaven, in cookie form.

Real Estate Selling: So I mentioned that my parents were selling their house. Well, while I was watching the dogs, a couple came by and fell head over heels in love with their house. And bought it the next day! It really was amazing, because the house went on the market the Monday before, and sold in only 6 days! My Mom was really nervous about moving, and that really helped to confirm for her that was what God wanted them to do, because it was amazing that it sold so fast, and for full price! And this past Monday, my parents made an offer and entered into a contract on a house out in the Petroglyphs that they fell in love with. It’s a pretty sweet house, and the backyard backs up to the Petroglyph National Monument, so all the land behind them is protected land, so the gorgeous view is there to stay. I’m sure you’ll be hearing more of this, as I will no doubt be enlisted for the moving process.

Spinning: Last, but certainly not least, I did some spinning last weekend! Yay! Noelle was at the Saturday Knitting Group that meets at Napoli Coffee, and she brought her spinning wheel, so I decided to mosey on over for a demo. I did a little spinning with a drop spindle and with the wheel, and really enjoyed it. I wasn’t a complete natural, but I’m sure with a lot more practice I’d get the hang of it. And Noelle assured me that there was plenty of room for my nerdiness with subjects such as gearing, wheel ratios, etc. I’m getting all hot and bothered just thinking about it. I took some pictures of my little bit of handspun green yarn, and those are in today’s Yarn Pr0n Friday, so check it out! Hmmm, Christmas is coming, and I’m thinking Spinning Wheel…(or maybe just a small down payment…). Oh crap, here we go, another hobby to add to the list…

<Begin Mac-vangelist Speech>

So if you’re a Mac nerd like me, yesterday was a big day. This week is the annual WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference), which is the yearly mecca for all Mac software developers, and others who just pay out the nose to hear our benevolent leader Steve Jobs speak about the new products and software. I don’t even want to consider the illegal things I’d be willing to do just to get a chance to go to WWDC or Macworld…(Think happy thoughts)…that’s how Mac-crazy I am. Don’t ever say good things about Windows in my presence, cause you’ll get an earful.

Anyway, yesterday was his Steveness’ keynote address, and there were some exciting things let me tell ya. He previewed the new version of Mac OS X, (you know what that means Stephanie? Another update in the Spring, I bet you can’t wait!), and there’s some pretty cool stuff. I won’t bore you all with the details, but you can go check out Leopard’s features if you want for yourself. And if you ever want to consider switching to a Mac, I’m always here for you :) And you know what? Macs run Windows now, so you can have the best of both worlds!

<End Mac-vangelist Speech> (We now return you to your regularily scheduled knitting post)

In the knitting world I continue to chug along in anticipation of the upcoming art fair. We only have 2 weeks left, and Mom and I are both knitting as fast as time allows. I finished another cabled purse, in green, that is waiting to be lined. And I’m working on a Tea Cozy from Last Minute Knitted Gifts. I think we’re going to dye some yarn this weekend which should be fun too. I’m not going to promise pictures, because I never deliver…one of these days I’ll get a digital camera.

Last night’s dinner (and today’s lunch) was pretty darn good, as evidenced by my little brother wolfing it down very quickly.

  • Spicy Mahi-Mahi with Creamy Avocado Sauce
  • Snap Peas with Mint
  • Asian Cucumber Salad
  • Apple Strudel (frozen from Trader Joes, but still very good)

That’s about all I have to report…I’ll leave you with a very cool picture of a rainbow I took from my car the other day. While at a stoplight in case you were wondering. Peace out.

Water in the Desert 02 Aug 06

Comments

This my friends is what happens when it rains in Albuquerque. You see, Albuquerque is in the desert, and hence, the planning engineers behind the city didn’t feel it was too necessary to build in a large water run-off system, since it doesn’t rain too often. Apparently they failed to forecast this summer’s monsoon season when building our arroyo system. And Monday evening’s rainstorm was quite the doozy. The flooding seen in this flickr set that I found occurred all over the city, making it very difficult to get home to rescue some very frightened dogs from the rain and lightning. Upon my arrival I decided to cancel all plans for the evening and stay home, and ended up making a nice meal of beef stroganoff for my brothers and me. Mmmmm, quite tasty.

In other news, I’m now officially a graduate student at UNM! It took a few trips down to campus to track down my advisor, and all the people I needed signatures from, but I’m all registered for classes and ready to go in a bit less than 3 weeks. It’s going to be really bizarre to go to such a big school after spending 4 years at such a tiny engineering school. I mean I’ve always been exposed to UNM from growing up here, but it’s completely different when you’re actually a student, walking around campus with all the violin and guitar playing hippies. ;)

I also try not to think about the fact that both of my brothers are in college now, with Koury at UNM and Clay starting TVI this fall…and that my Mom is going back to school at TVI to take a nursing refresher course and go back to work as an RN part-time. 4/5 people in my family are in college right now, how bizarre is that??? Maybe we should get my Dad to take some classes and then we can all commute to school together. That would be pretty interesting.

In knitting news, I finished another cable purse, in Lambs Pride Bulky Kiwi. I just have to line it and it’s done. And actually, believe it or not, that’s the only unfinished object I have right now. So Scout, I’m either way too OCD, or I just haven’t been knitting long enough, but that’s all the UFO action I have for the meme.

Finally, with summer coming to a close and fall arriving soon, I’ll leave you with a picture of something whose aroma will be filling the air soon. Yup. It’s almost chile roasting season. Sweet.

The Boxes Are Multiplying 05 Jul 06

Comment

It seems like no matter how much work I put into unpacking and organizing stuff every night, I never ever make a dent in the boxes sitting in the garage. I really wish I could explain why, but I think it has something to do with some mysterious quantum phenomenon…or it could just be that I’m so OCD that every thing has to be put away perfectly. Ok, so maybe that’s it.

So pretty much the problem is that since I actually live in a house now that I really like, not some ghetto poor student house in Socorro, I find myself wanting to keep things neat, clean and overall tidy. (Much to the chagrin of my brother and our other roommate, who think I’m some kind of neat freak because I vacuum every other night…that’s normal isn’t it?) But no matter how long it takes me, I will persist until all the boxes are gone and I can park my car in the garage.

In other news, not too much exciting is occuring on the knitting front…I’m pretty much just making hats, etc. But it’s keeping me busy and I’m enjoying cranking out some easy breezy stuff, it’s a nice break from intarsia, uber-precise felting, or whatever crazy knitting challenge I usually throw at myself.

And since no post is complete without pictures, I’ll give you some lovely pictures of what I made for dinner earlier this evening. It was really, really good, definitely one to try. It’s Fusilli pasta with Asparagus, Sugar Snap Peas, Avocado, Mint & Basil. It’s a great light summer dish, and isn’t too heavy, but if the ingredients are fresh, man is it good! I would definitely recommend getting the freshest veggies & herbs you can, from say B. Riley Fresh Herbs or any other store in your area that has some very good produce. If you want the recipe, leave a comment or e-mail me.
