Olfactory Offense 23Jan08

The Low Talker. Man Hands. Vegetable Lasagna. Denim Vest. If you’re a Seinfeld fan, you know what I’m talking about. Nicknaming a person based on a strange attribute or idiosyncrasy can often be quite humorous. I’ll even admit that I have a few nicknames for select people. I don’t really attach monikers to people I know, but there are a few people at school/work/etc. that I encounter often enough to warrant more than just, “the guy 3 doors down from my office.”

Anyway, I often wonder what monikers people might have for me, and I think I might have stumbled upon one: Mr. Skunk Coffee. See, I leave a French Press at work, and everyday I bring in fresh beans to make my morning coffee. Well my office is pretty much the Folgers pouch brewed in a percolator type, so strong earthy coffee is definitely not par for the course. (If you’re a Folgers fan, I have nothing against you, I just like my coffee with an obscene amount of grit. ;) Mmmmm.)

Lately it seems that someone will walk into the lab, start sniffing, and declare, “do you smell a skunk?”, or “who sprayed pesticides in here?”. Inevitably they’ll end up in my cubicle to point a finger at my delicious coffee. I’m not really sure where skunks or pesticides come into the equation, it’s just strong coffee, but I do wonder if it’s strong enough to become a moniker. Any thoughts? Do you think pressed coffee smells like skunks?

I might just take some air freshener in with me, since I think I’d rather be the guy whose cubicle smells like flowers, instead of the guy whose cubicle smells like skunks.

In the land of things that don’t smell, I finished a lovely hat this weekend, and I’m quite smitten with it.

I used a skein of a luscious llama and soysilk blend that I picked up at the Taos Wool Festival, in a nice tweedy brown. I wasn’t ever able to decide what to do with it, until I flipped through The Knitting (Man)ual and saw the Cabled Hat and Scarf pattern. The combination of a big fat cable with seed and moss stitch was too much to resist. I only had 130 yards of the llama, so I used some leftover Plymouth Suri Merino for the brim and the top of the crown.

must be my large brain...

Just in time for the cold snap we’ve been having here, brrr! It was below 20 almost everyday last week! This is the desert, not the arctic, sheesh. ;) You can view the project on Ravelry if you’re a member, for more details. I also managed to finish the Herringbone Mittens, but I haven’t taken them off of my hands to get pictures yet! They’re so warm and cozy, and were the perfect start to my stranded mitten obsession.

I’ll leave you with a small taste of the next planned project. That is if I ever take the yarn out of it’s resting place in the swift! It just looks so nice there, don’t you think?

Caffeination Nation 07Aug07

Ah, nothing like a good vacation! Especially when it’s filled with lots of relaxation, friends, knitting and tasty coffee. I may not even come back. Anyone know of any engineering jobs up here? ;) (Don’t worry Mom, I’ll come back for Emma and Dallas!)

The wedding was really beautiful, as it was right outside near the shore of the Puget Sound. Nothing like a beautiful lodge, a dynamite view and a nice sea breeze for a great wedding. Oh, and waking up to this nearby view helps too. ;)

a room w/ a view

The flowers at the wedding lodge didn’t hurt either.

WA has so many flowers!

I’m also getting quite my caffeine fill these days too. Nothing like some perfectly extracted espresso and smooth microfoamed milk to start out the morning with. Or an hour after morning. Or an hour before lunch. Or after lunch. Or…ok, I think you get the picture.

Then I met up with Georgia and Sarah for an afternoon yarn crawl. Those gals sure know how to get a guy to buy lots of yarn! They were both super fun, and I’m so glad to finally meet them! Sarah took a picture of Georgia and I, and it wasn’t until later I realized that we never got a picture of her! Sorry Sarah!

arrr, it's yarn pirate!

We hit up both Hilltop Yarns (the clerk had a blog and was super nice, but I don’t remember her blog name! trash!) and Fiber Gallery (where we saw Jessica who works there!) I’ve never met anyone I’ve only known online before, so 2 people in one day was lots of fun! Thanks so much to both Georgia and Sarah, I had a really awesome time, and got some awesome yarns.

I’m looking forward to the rest of the week, hanging out with my awesome friend Holly and just relaxing. Check out the view from her apartment’s roof!

look, tall buildings!

It’s gonna be awesome. ;)

Calling All Chicagoans 28Nov06

Alright people, time for some delurking. I’m headed to Chicago in a few days (leaving on Friday, my birthday!), and I need the scoop on the best places to go/knit/shop etc. Here’s a list of some of the things I have planned for my relaxation weekend.

  1. Visit some yarn stores. Which ones are the best?
  2. Drink good coffee. I’m planning to hit up Intelligentsia Coffee, any other suggestions?
  3. Do some Christmas shopping. My brother loves the Chicago Bears, so I promised to get him some Bears stuff for Christmas. I know there’s a Pro Shop at Soldier Field, and some places on or around Michigan Ave. Anywhere else I can get good Bears stuff?
  4. Go to an amazing concert! The concert will be at the Double Door, which I hear is an amazing place for live music.

Those are the things that are slated for the agenda, but I’m really open to anything else that’s fun to do in Chicago. I saw all the museums and attractions there a few years ago, so I think this trip will be more about exploring the city and culture, and just hanging out.

So now it’s your turn to help out. Where should I go, what should I eat, where’s the best yarn and/or coffee? Any little shops I absolutely need to check out?

Ok, this thinly veiled attempt at procrastination has to come to an end sadly. I’m still working on the test of death, but it’s due today, so it will be out of my life soon enough. I’m hoping to make it to SnB, but the test is due at 11 PM, so who knows. I will make every attempt at finishing before then, because I certainly don’t want to be on campus until 11 PM. Also, the Snow Angels yarn should be going up either today or tomorrow, I’ll let you know when it’s up!

Yarn and Coffee 17Nov06

What more could you need?

First, let me say welcome to visitors from Yarnival Volume 3! My History of Sorts post was a featured article, thanks Cara!

I’m very thankful that it’s Friday, cause I could use a break. This week has been so crazy, it just seems like the homework was shoveled upon me by a bulldozer. It’s still not over, I’m going to have plenty to do over Thanksgiving break (curse you professors!), but at least I have a breather now. It was during my free evening last night that I dyed up some new yarn that I’m just itching to share.

I’m getting faster, leaner and more efficient at the yarn dyeing, so it’s much less of a hassle to get out the stuff and crank out a few skeins. Which is nice, because I used to dread getting out all the stuff and making such a huge mess. Now that things are getting more streamlined I’m more inclined to dye when I have an hour or two free, which means more yarn for you guys. :)

It also helps that I have a nifty new spreadsheet…I just type in the weight of the yarn, and select from my list of colorways, and it spits out the amount of water, vinegar and each dye primary to use. Spreadsheets totally turn me on. I hope that doesn’t creep you out…

ANYWAY…Here’s the yarn!

new colors! new yarn colors
"Hurry up and reskein us!"

(from left to right in the 2nd photo)

  1. Printed Circuit Board (1500 MHz Merino SW): This one’s an Adam exclusive…a very nerdy yarn just for you. In case you don’t know what a printed circuit board is, it’s what’s inside your computer. I’ve designed a few of these bad boys, and the color scheme just screams Electrical Engineering, so I had to translate it to some yarn. Two shades of green (a very subtle difference, but still noticeable) for the circuit layers, and a gold/yellow color for the copper trace lines. Buy some for your nerdy significant other, they’ll love it!

  2. Peppermint Cocoa (1500 MHz Merino/Tencel SW): One of my favorite childhood memories is making hot cocoa from my Mom’s homemade mix and stirring it with a peppermint candy cane. Mmmmm. This yarn is the embodiment of that memory, with a nice chocolate color, mixed in with peppermint red and white. Ok, I have to go make some hot cocoa, see ya later…Oh wait, the post isn’t done yet? Crap!

  3. Berrylicious (1500 MHz Merino/Tencel SW): This one has dark purple, light purple and raspberry tones, and it just shines in the merino/tencel yarn. Scout? This color is in honor of you, since I know you love these colors. It makes me hungry for some fruit and yogurt, or jam! Alright, I really need to stop talking about food, I’m starving!

I’m going to reskein these babies tonight, wrap some labels around them and list them on etsy, and then you can have at it! I’d really love to sell some yarn (it’s been a bit of a dry spell recently), so here’s some more not-so subliminal messaging:

BUY YARN, BUY YARN, BUY YARN, BUY YARN, BUY YARN
adamknits.etsy.com

Also, I made some buttons for both the blog and the etsy shop, and you’re more than welcome to snag one (check the sidebar on the main page) and add it to your site if you so please. Now without further ado, let’s move onto the coffee!

If you’ve known me for any amount of time I’m sure you know that I’m a total coffee addict. Some might say snob…but I would just say "selective". My morning coffee preparation ritual is something I look forward to everyday, and I figured I’d share it with you here. I like to brew my coffee in a French Press, with freshly roasted beans from Moon’s Coffee and Tea. The Tanzania Peaberry is my favorite.

grind me up! waiting for the water

The ritual starts with the grinding of the beans, at a very coarse grind. This is the key element to the French Press. Then I boil some water, but once it’s boiled, I let it sit for a few minutes. Water just under boiling is best, because if it’s too hot the coffee will be overextracted and bitter. Once the water is ready, I pour it on the coffee and stir it up really good. Then steep it for exactly 4 minutes.

brewing... 4 minutes later

I stir the slurry ( an actual technical term :) ) a few times during the steeping process also, to make sure that the grounds and the water interact as much as possible. Then once 4 minutes are up, the plunger goes in, and the grounds are pressed to the bottom. Then I enjoy! I really like the French Press because it brings out the flavor of the coffee really well. It’s much stronger than other methods, but I enjoy my coffee as strong as mud. Mmmmm.

That’s it for today, sayonara!

Coffee…Just Like Crack, But Tastier! 07Sep06

So in case you didn’t know, I’m a coffee addict/crazed maniac aficionado, in the most extreme sense. I’ve been drinking the stuff since I was a little child (15 actually), and I enjoy it way too much to stop. Coffee is my biggest vice…and yes, I’ve heard a million times, “caffeine is bad for you…you’ll stunt your growth…”, but I don’t care, because coffee and I are deeply in love, and we ran off to Vegas years ago. But I’m not the average coffee drinker, I’ll come right out and admit it: I’m a coffee snob. (I can hear the gasps in the blogosphere).

I know what I like, and I’m very particular about what I will label as coffee. So much so, that I jumped on the chance to go to Seattle last summer, as my own personal journey to the mecca of espresso. See, there’s not many places that I’ve found in Albuquerque (ok, none actually) that make a shot of espresso that’s not over or under-extracted with very little crema and lots of acidity, and make perfectly smooth microfoamed milk. That bitter stuff with the giant bubbles at Starbuck’s? No thanks, I’ll pass. My personal favorite is the Espresso Macchiato, which is heavenly when it’s made right, like at Espresso Vivace, or Caffe Vita (as seen below), mmmm.

the barista even signed my napkin since I was such a fanboy

These days, I usually enjoy my morning coffee out of a French Press, usually the Tanzanian Peaberry roast from Moon’s Coffee and Tea, which is a wonderful roastery down the street from my house. Good stuff I tell ya.

So where am I going with all of this coffee talk? Well, occassionally my addiction dedication to coffee can get me into trouble. Specifically when I spill said coffee into the keyboard of my work laptop. As much as I love both electronics and coffee, they don’t mix too well…and my poor computer with a non-working keyboard can attest to that. Luckily, one of the other students who just went back to school in another state left his desktop here, so I’ve commandered that while my poor laptop is being fixed. I guess it’s not a good idea for such a clumsy person to drink a piping hot cup of joe so close to their keyboard. Just a thought…

In yarn dyeing news…

I have 2 skeins of sport weight sock yarn dyed up, but I’m planning to do some more dyeing tonight and tomorrow, so I’ll wait on a shop update until everything is done. I currently have a NM Sunset in Sport Weight, and a cool new colorway that I’m calling, well I don’t know what I’m calling it yet, but I’ll think of something. And I have more ideas for colorways than I can count, so there’s plenty more stuff coming.

Finally, in knitting news…

I do still knit, and a pregnant Mom in my Church Small Group can attest to that, as her soon to be born baby boy now has a nice cotton cap to cover his tiny little head. And I’m churning away on a pair of socks while catching up on the BSG. I only have one more episode to go in Season 2, and Season 2.5 isn’t on DVD for another 2 weeks!!! What will I do???
