Crushed Under Homework 21 Nov 06

Comments

Just a quick post to say “Hi! I’m still here!”. It was a jam packed weekend, filled with cleaning, dyeing, knitting and shopping. I got lots done, except for homework that is, and got to relax a bit. I certainly needed some relaxation after the worst week of homework for the entire semester. Ugh. But the train just keeps on rolling, because I have two assignments to finish up and turn in today, a big assignment due next Monday, and a long take-home test due after Thanksgiving that will be passed out today. I might just pass out today too.

The light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter though, only a few more weeks left until the end of the semester. And just a little more than a week before my birthday and the Over the Rhine show in Chicago! I’m also going to announce a special birthday contest, and maybe even a yarn sale, woo-hoo!

That’s about all I have time for today, but coming up tomorrow is my Hairstory, featuring pretty much all the colors the rainbow, and lots of Henna. Later peeps!

practically a werewolf!

See this? All this hair? Say goodbye to it. Cause in a few hours it will be gone. Well not all of it…see I’m conflicted. I’ve never ever let my hair grow this long before, and part of me wants to keep growing it out to see what happens. But the other part of me says, “it’s driving you crazy! hack it off!” I’m at least going to get the sides and sideburns trimmed to manageable levels, but I might just have it all cut really short like I usually do.

If you have an opinion on this, now’s the time to speak up, because it just might be gone this afternoon. Not that it’s a life altering haircut or anything. This is only 2 months without a haircut, so I could easily grow it back if I wanted. I think I go through this same cycle every winter, and every year I decide to cut it. Maybe it’s time for a change.

Also, if you look really close, you can see my facial hair in the picture. One whole week’s worth. Yeah, facial hair is not my forte.

Anyway, here’s what else I’ve been up to lately. The mini-skeins are multiplying! Everytime I walk out into the kitchen, there seems to be more in the pile!

color hotness they're multiplying

And thanks to the help of the mini-skeins, I dyed up this lovely custom order skein last night. It’s a blend of different greens, with a lovely forest, olive and yellow-green. I never want to part with my yarn after it’s dyed, and this one is no exception! It’s so lovely, I just want to look at it all day. If the customer doesn’t end up liking it, it’ll go up in the etsy shop for all of you lovely people. (**Is anyone else super excited about the new etsy update? I can’t wait to login to the new site come Monday!**)

Time to get some things accomplished now…house cleaning, hair cutting, laundry washing, etc. Although I can’t guarantee I won’t just dye yarn. ;)

Sneak Peek 07 Nov 06

Alright, I couldn’t resist taking some pictures of what I’ve been up to for dyeing lately…so here’s your sneak peek.

First up we have a lot of skeins that are ready to be dyed up, and thanks to my new handy skeinwinder, it took less than an hour for all those! It’s like moving from a horse and carriage to a Model T. Someday I’m hoping to move to the electric version, but I’m very happy with the Model T for now.

all skeined up and nowhere to go!
all skeined up…and nowhere to go!

That’s all well and good, but here’s the real exciting stuff. The colors. And some sexy ones these are! Here’s a bunch of sample skeins that I dyed up the other night, as I experiment with making my own custom colors. Not to mention that these skeins will help immensely when planning new colorways. I hope to have a whole notebook someday, like one of those painter’s color palletes, but with yarn!

coloriffic!

Ok, I better stop now before I spill all the beans. It may be a while but I promise that the wait for the big “reinvention” announcement will be worth it.

And if you’re in NM or west and haven’t voted, get off your butt and get voting! I voted this afternoon and sadly didn’t get any knitting in. There was no one in the line at all. A blunt object could have come in handy with the volunteer who was convinced I wasn’t old enough to be voting…

Well I’m off to SnB at the Flying Star, where there will be no consumption of oily dressing tonight. In fact, the knitting will most likely remain securely locked in my bag until the entire table is devoid of food. I certainly don’t need another lesson about the dangers of knitting in a restaurant.

Apple Mania! 04 Nov 06

Comments

Alright folks, this post will be filled with me fawning and gushing all over the place like a total fanboy…so you’ve be warned.

Now that the disclaimer is out of the way, here we go.

We have an APPLE STORE IN ALBUQUERQUE!!!

For those of you who aren’t Apple crazy (leave a comment so I can harass you to buy a Mac!), here’s a quick indoctrination guide.

  1. Apple Nerds are fanatics
  2. Big Apple events (such as the Macworld Keynote, or an Apple Store Opening) are akin to these other life changing events, including, but not limited to: college graduation, turning 21, getting married, having kids, buying a first house, …
  3. The lines to get into new Apple Stores are often hours long, and the people at the front of the lines are often bestowed with lots of swag, and bragging rights among the Apple Elite.
  4. Apple Stores are traditionally reserved for cities where Apple feels that they can make a significant market impact, and it’s a huge deal that Albuquerque gets one. We’re pretty much officially on the map now.

If you’re still perplexed, I recommend the excellent book The Cult of Mac. It’s a great book with lots of insight as to why a computer company has such a devoted following.

Indoctrination Complete. Let’s continue with the gushing.

This past Wednesday, the Apple Store in the new ABQ Uptown Mall had it’s grand opening, and yours truly was there for all the action. The store opened at 10 AM, and I showed up bright and early at 8 AM to secure my free t-shirt (for being one of the first 1000 people) and my place in line. Please note that I did go by the night before with the necessary camping supplies, but at 9 PM there was no one there and I figured I’d be safe to go in the morning. It was pretty cold, otherwise I’m sure there would have been a bunch of overnighters.

a beacon of hope
the glowing beacon of hope

I ended up being about number 20 in line, so I hunkered down to wait. I met tons of fellow Mac nerds, got a bunch of requests to duplicate my Apple tote for other Mac nerds, drank coffee, knitted a bit, checked my e-mail, and had a generally lovely time. I wouldn’t have minded if it had been a bit warmer but I was able to power through for Apple.

they were just as psyched as we were!
the employees were just as psyched as we were!

And was it ever worth it! That was quite the experience! When they opened the doors people begin to rush in, and the employees had formed a human tunnel and were giving out t-shirts, high fives and lots of screams. It really was like being at a Beatles concert, except with nerds.

oh yeah, there's a genius bar in my city now
I’m pretty excited that ABQ has a Genius Bar

Definitely a very fun day, and a good excuse to take off work ;) Although, my wallet is totally doomed now with both the new Village Wools and the Apple Store here…it could be dangerous.

my bag is so hot right now!

A History of Sorts 01 Nov 06

Looking back one year, I never would have imagined that I’d be where I am at now. Sitting here, typing out a post on my knitting blog. I would have never imagined that I would soon carry sticks and yarn with me everywhere. I would have never imagined that I’d soon knit socks during classes, receiving more than one confused stare from a professor or classmate. I would have never imagined that I would one day use knitting as a way to gauge whether a cute girl was “dating material”**. I would have never imagined that I’d spend my evenings and weekends **winding and dyeing yarn, just because it’s fun. But here I am, one year later, and all of these things that I would have never thought about have come true. So what is it about knitting that has impacted me so much? What is it about purposefully twisting yarn into loops that has me all twisted into loops? Click on to find out!
