The Mothership’s Siren Song 30 Oct 07

So the Leopard release was quite spectacular. I was one of the first 20 people in line (and was actually in line with some of the same people from the Apple Store opening!), so I did get a t-shirt, and my copy of Leopard. I was glad I went early too, since half and hour before the store opened, the line went all the way around the block!

It was certainly worth it too, because Leopard is pretty sweet. I’d highly recommend it if you are on the fence about upgrading. I also gave into the siren song of the iPod while in the Apple store, and picked up a shiny new toy. I’m so weak.* ;)

"come on, just one touch"

I’ve been iPod less for a while now, and the combination of a big screen, WiFi with Safari, and the ability to banish my car radio turned out to be too much to handle. Maybe someday I’ll get an iPhone, but for now, the iPod Touch is close enough for me. It’s a bit easier on the wallet too, especially since I barely ever use my phone.

Oh Apple, why must you exploit my weakness for shiny things?

In other news, I just sent all these lovelies off to The Loopy Ewe today. Phew! Look for it sometime soon, in one of Sheri’s infamous sneak ups. Keep an eye out too, because the last batch went crazy fast! (who knew nerdy yarn could be so popular?) There’s a few new colorways in there, and all the yarn is my new 850 MHz Merino sock yarn.

and on the seventh day

Between finishing up the yarn dyeing and other things this weekend, it was pretty crazy. I ended up spending an hour cleaning up black yarn dye on Sunday, after tipping over one of the containers I was using all over the floor and onto Dallas, who happened to be laying right under the table. The poor guy jumped up, sending yarn dye flying all over the creation. Luckily it didn’t really damage anything, and after a long scrub Dallas was no longer all black (good thing I didn’t spill warm water and vinegar on him too!), but it was quite the detour from my dyeing plans that day.

I also had a big family occasion this weekend, as my Grandparents celebrated their 60th Anniversary. I admire my Grandparents profusely, and hope that someday I can have a marriage as strong as theirs. It’s not always easy, but they’ve stuck by each other through everything for 60 years, and I think that’s so cool. So Happy Anniversary Grandma and Grandpa, I love you both!

Well, that’s about it for me peeps. I need to get to bed before it gets too late, so I’ll catch you later. Next time I can show you how I just re-organized my office with a yarn shelf. Yup, I have a yarn shelf now…it’s a slippery slope.

Oh, and beware of those Apple stores!

In another stunning turn of events, I bring you a completely lame blog post, padding with only pictures of my knitting in progress. I have a good excuse though, for I’m off to the mothership, to pick myself up a copy of Leopard, and hopefully one of the free t-shirts if I’m in the first 500. (I should be, I’m 2 hours early. I’m a nut like that.)

So here’s what I’ve been up to, when not dreaming of Time Machines and Spaces and tabbed iChat windows…

Now I just have to wait until June. :(

And yes, I realize I’m crazy, but I’m ok with it. Being an Apple fanboy is lots of fun!

Alright folks, this post will be filled with me fawning and gushing all over the place like a total fanboy…so you’ve be warned.

Now that the disclaimer is out of the way, here we go.

We have an APPLE STORE IN ALBUQUERQUE!!!

For those of you who aren’t Apple crazy (leave a comment so I can harass you to buy a Mac!), here’s a quick indoctrination guide.

  1. Apple Nerds are fanatics
  2. Big Apple events (such as the Macworld Keynote, or an Apple Store Opening) are akin to these other life changing events, including, but not limited to: college graduation, turning 21, getting married, having kids, buying a first house, …
  3. The lines to get into new Apple Stores are often hours long, and the people at the front of the lines are often bestowed with lots of swag, and bragging rights among the Apple Elite.
  4. Apple Stores are traditionally reserved for cities where Apple feels that they can make a significant market impact, and it’s a huge deal that Albuquerque gets one. We’re pretty much officially on the map now.

If you’re still perplexed, I recommend the excellent book The Cult of Mac. It’s a great book with lots of insight as to why a computer company has such a devoted following.

Indoctrination Complete. Let’s continue with the gushing.

This past Wednesday, the Apple Store in the new ABQ Uptown Mall had it’s grand opening, and yours truly was there for all the action. The store opened at 10 AM, and I showed up bright and early at 8 AM to secure my free t-shirt (for being one of the first 1000 people) and my place in line. Please note that I did go by the night before with the necessary camping supplies, but at 9 PM there was no one there and I figured I’d be safe to go in the morning. It was pretty cold, otherwise I’m sure there would have been a bunch of overnighters.

a beacon of hope
the glowing beacon of hope

I ended up being about number 20 in line, so I hunkered down to wait. I met tons of fellow Mac nerds, got a bunch of requests to duplicate my Apple tote for other Mac nerds, drank coffee, knitted a bit, checked my e-mail, and had a generally lovely time. I wouldn’t have minded if it had been a bit warmer but I was able to power through for Apple.

they were just as psyched as we were!
the employees were just as psyched as we were!

And was it ever worth it! That was quite the experience! When they opened the doors people begin to rush in, and the employees had formed a human tunnel and were giving out t-shirts, high fives and lots of screams. It really was like being at a Beatles concert, except with nerds.

oh yeah, there's a genius bar in my city now
I’m pretty excited that ABQ has a Genius Bar

Definitely a very fun day, and a good excuse to take off work ;) Although, my wallet is totally doomed now with both the new Village Wools and the Apple Store here…it could be dangerous.

Just a few quick notes, since I have a very big and special “Adam’s History in Knitting” post coming up on Wednesday.

  • Having a car with a plastic bumper is fantastic. Especially when you get rear-ended at a stoplight and your car suffers no damage, cause your bumper just pops back into place with no dents. I was very happy about this, especially since I was on my way to buy yarn and if I had to get my car fixed, well that would have shot the yarn budget.
  • The Apple Store Albuquerque opens on Wednesday! An Apple Store and my knitting anniversary on the same day? Needless to say, I will be at said store very early, camping out in the line so that I can receive a free shirt and whatever other swag the generous Apple employees choose to bestow upon us humble Mac users.
  • My parents have closed on their old house, and will close on their new house tomorrow morning. Let the moving fun begin! (Or not…)
  • Remember, there’s still FREE Shipping on all the yarn in the etsy shop through tomorrow! That’s $4.05 you get to keep for yourself!
  • I have restocked on base yarns, and will be spending future evenings in the kitchen with lots of scientific equipment, creating some very cool new colorways that are floating around in my head.
  • There’s still plenty of knitting going on at my house, but Christmas surprises forbids me from taking pictures. So be warned, November might be filled with posts of dog pictures, rather than knitting pictures. Please forgive me in advance.

That’s it for now, I gotta make like an atom and split! (Hahahahahaha, I’m so funny! I can’t stop laughing!…Please, beat me now)
