It’s been 2 weeks, and the honeymoon period is definitely not over yet. I never knew you could have so much fun with a cordless drill! Just take a look at my latest project. It’s like I have my own little yarn store, right in my office!
Pretty sweet eh? It turns out that the yarn hutch I bought a few months ago was way too big for the new house, so I came up with this alternate yarn storage system. Oh the things you can accomplish with graph paper, a tape measure and some screws.
I also got all the Yarn Nerd boxes unpacked into the Shedquarters, and am almost ready to get the dye pots going. I’m so psyched to have a separate dyeing workspace, especially such a snazzy one. I have lots of work surfaces, plenty of storage, and lights and electricity. There’s no water, but I think a big plastic utility sink and a big drain bucket should suffice. There’s a hose right outside the shed that I can hook up to the sink faucet, and I’ll be in business. Although, first I might inform my neighbors that I’m not running a meth lab, since they might wonder what I’m doing in the shed with gloves and a dust mask. ;)
Now that Yarn Nerd HQ is unpacked, it means that there is only one stronghold of boxes left, in the garage. It may stay that way for a bit though, since I don’t have a pressing need to park inside, especially since I’m riding my bike to work lots. Did I mention that the new house is only 3 miles from work? It takes no time at all to get to the office (about 18 minutes on the bike, versus about 15 to drive and walk in from the parking lot), which I’m really loving. There’s even a small detour through one of the local golf courses. Nothing like the possibility of getting clunked in the head with a line drive to speed up the commute.
Knitting has been a bit slow with all the house chores, but I do have a bit of something to tease you with. I just have to finish the lining thumb on my second mitten, and the Fiddleheads will be complete. These are about the most perfect mittens ever, and I get so many compliments everytime I work on them in public. Adrian really hit it out of the park with this kit, between the amazing pattern and the heavenly yarn.
I’m reluctant to finish the thumb, because then that means I’ll be done, and I’m not sure I want the experience to end just yet. Not to mention that I won’t be able to wear them for many months. Unless I want to be sent to a white padded room for wearing lined mittens in 98 degree heat.
Also, thanks to everyone on your comments about the house tour, I really appreciated all of them! Not to mention all the good paint suggestions (I think I’m going to go with the sage green if you’re curious, but it may be a bit before I actually get around to it).
That’s about all I have, but check back soon to find out what I’ve drilled a hole into next. It’s such an exciting life I lead. ;)

I need to get a nice wall of cork board or that holed board for blocking giant shawls. Be sure to ventilate the shed : )
Congratulations on your new home, I know just how it feels!!! ;) I looove the storage system, but due to a recent moth scare I’m too chicken to leave my yarn out in the open right now (I suppose the psycosis will wear off in a year or two…).
Looks nifty with the new HQ. Will keep my eyes out for new yarn, when I need to treat myself!
I like your yarn storage system! It’s fun to see your projects - whether it be cool headquarters or pretty knits!
Wow. The shedquarters. That is just so totally cool. I want one, and all the kit in it!
wooo hooo what an awesome area! You’ll be cranking out the HP’s now!
The yarn display looks just like a man and his ‘tools’. A fiber content and weight for all different type jobs! Looks really great too and such a creative idea. Your shed is gonna be the perfect fiber retreat.
How exciting! That all looks great! Oh, and I’m enjoying the hell out of my caterpillar kit. That Monarch yarn is fantastic! I’m all about the exclamation points today!
You’ve gotten so organized in a short time. Congrats to you! The yarn store and dye studio look amazing. I can’t wait to see your creations from all your hard work.
The shedquarters looks awesome! Everything you could possibly want and need for your operations. I love the idea that you’re the crazy neighbor who will rouse suspicion. congrats again!
Very very cool! :)
So jealous of your new house and office full of yarn. Fiddle head looks great…I should cast-on mine already. :-p
Oh, and yeah for Sage Green!
That’s pretty hilarious about the mittens, because I said the same thing about mine…brilliant pattern, don’t want to finish, crazy hot… Sadly, I did finish, but I’m petting them a bit before I send them away.
Pegboard is rockin.
Congrats again! I love the hanging yarn look. Another thing I have always wanted to do is store yarn in those hanging wire fruit baskets.
will paint for yarn
Isn’t it great to find a space for your yarn and all of your suppiles. It really is looking good!
What a great storage idea! And your shed will be wonderful. I know what you mean about the thumb. I get the same way with a good book as I near the last few pages.
Oh my god I love that yarn wall! Too bad my own stash would never fit in our house, like that.
(Hm. Unless I could convince my husband that one of our living room walls should really be a yarn rack… must think on this. :)
The meth lab concept is just hilarious!
I love the shedquarters!
I also know what you mean about the dangers of golf courses to non-golfers…I jog on a canal path near my apt, but to get there I go by the edge of the 18th hole of the golf course. I’ve nearly gotten hit twice. Some folks have REALLY bad aim!
ONLY in Albuquerque would you even think to notify your neighbors that you are in fact dyeing yarn, and not running a meth lab. Also only in Albuquerque..they’ll probably be suspicious regardless. ;o)
I am jealous of the shed and the mittens! Thanks for posting awesome pictures all the time! They make me happy!
That is fantastic. What a great space.
What an awesome way to store your yarn!
Your dying shed is such a great spot - totally perfect!
Congrats on the new house!
“Shedquarters” Hee! That’s awesome.
OMG. I hate you. I’m totally jealous. Errrr I mean. Wow that space is cool! lol
so excited for you!!! I wonder… I will chime in with others on here - be sure to ventillate the shedquarters… and stick some circulation of some sort in there - maybe a little fan on the side that can reverse - blowing in or out… something to keep the fumes down…
Oh I love that! That’s a great idea for more yarn space. I think I’m going to look into doing something like that for my fiber.
Congrats on getting your shedquarters set up! Hope you have something in there to help cool the place down when it’s hot out.
Just a thought…. but if you call your yarn studio “shedquarters” when you tell your neighbors that you are not running a meth lab….. they are never gonna believe you! Also…. for just a second… pretend that it wouldnt be you it was happening to… and then think about how funny it would be for the police to show up and start asking questions only to be taken to the shedquarters to find that all that “meth” you are cooking is a drug of a different kind…. Yarn! HAHA! So funny!
I love how your house is like the court of craft. And I still think the yarn store in your home is the best thing evah.
Definitely tell the neighbors what you’re up to, lol!!
We just got rid of some neighbors who WERE running a meth lab, in a camper, and it sure made life interesting for a bit! (They didn’t stay long).
Sounds like you’re having a blast setting up, good for you!
Enjoy!
Marissa
genius storage system!
I will copy it.
Thanks 1000 times.

Okay. It’s like this. I need one of those holey boards… with the pegs… and the yarn… and the beautimus magnificus organization. drools
What a great little set up! (just be careful you know where the electrical wiring and pipes are if you go hog wild with your drill…)… When we moved in here, DH bought a humongous door for $5 at the state surplus sale, to make a huge lab/microscope table. Then he went out and bought a corded drill for $200 to build it. It still makes me laugh… though the drill WAS also used to build a retaining wall and for loads of other things, it’s a ‘power’ power tool, ya know?
your yarn storage is just the coolest.
and shedquarters! wow….i would love to play in there!
Hey there, hon! It’s been WAY to long since I”ve had blogreading time but I am SO happy to see YOU so happy! I wish I were there to help set up and organize- it looks superfun! Ah, how I dream of a craft space all my own. BTW, you enabler, I haven’t started spinning yet…but soon! Quilting is taking over…
Things I am envious of:
1) your peg board of yarn
2) your dyeing shed
3) your fiddleheads
Fantastic job with all of ‘em, you live in fiber heaven!
gasp
You are made of awesome!
Sadly, I do not own my home, and therefore cannot emulate your flair with the drill (though I own two) drat that security deposit… - my version uses multiple of those cheezy clear plastic 3-drawer storage “units” from the hardware store. Sadly, owning a cat (or sometimes, being owned by one) means I must keep curious little hooked paws out of my yarn stash.
I’ll have to stop by your blog more often and vicariously enjoy your separate workspace (as I effectively live in my art studio). Any chance you’ll be posting pics of the garden too? (yep, I’m a gardener too - when it’s not bloody raining and tornadoing. yes, tornadoes in new england. whaaa?)
best~
