I Haz a House! 10 Jun 08

Well peeps, it’s done! I signed on the dotted line (about 30 million times by my count), forked over a very large check, and a few hours later was the proud owner of a new set of keys. Which happen to open my sweet new house!

if the key fits

Thanks to my wonderful family and friends, I was able move all of my stuff and clean the old house all in one afternoon. It was quite a push, but it was worth it to not have to shuttle back and forth on Friday to finish up the moving. So thanks guys, I couldn’t have done it without you!

I’m also mostly unpacked at this point, and just have my office and the Yarn Nerd shed to contend with. I had originally planned to paint last weekend as well, but that turned out to be a very ambitious achievement. Just the task of getting unpacked and cleaning was exhausting enough!

Anyway, would you like a guided tour? (Do note that the walls are a bit bare right now, so I’ll be sure to update you when I paint and hang things)

the new digs!

After walking in the front door we have a lovely view of the dining room. The floor is new wood laminate, ala Pergo, and I love the section of light flooring in the dining room that the table sits on.

The living room is directly behind you, and is one of Emma’s favorite rooms in the house. (although she tends to favor any room with furniture she can lay on…). I’d like to paint that big gray wall a nice buttery yellow, and eventually will be getting new cushions and fabric for my rattan set. The furniture was bought by my Great Grandmother many many years ago, and the cushions are a bit petrified.

If you turn back around and go to the left, you’ll proceed down the hallway to the bedrooms.

On your way, you pass the kitchen, which is my favorite room in the house. It’s a bit smaller than my previous one, but has plenty of cabinet space and terrific lighting. I really love the white scheme, as it makes the kitchen bright and cheery.

I also love the fridge, which has a definite 70s vibe with its metal racks and plastic trimmed handles.

Now it’s onto the master bedroom, and the most amazing bed I’ve ever slept in. I’ve had a futon for the last 6 years, and I think it’s high time I graduated to real bed. My back agrees whole heartedly. Not only did I find a sweet bedroom set on clearance, I also got some very cool linens to go along. I’m torn between painting the wall a sagey green or a sky blue, what do you think?

Next up is the bathroom, which is completely redone, with new tile and fixtures. I also think the orange/white sponge walls are pretty sweet, especially with pewter and sprout green accents.

There’s two other rooms not pictured, one being my roommate’s, and the other being my office, which is still unpacked. Now follow me to the other side of the house (yup, there’s more!), where we have a nice laundry room with lots of storage.

suds room

Then it’s onto the sunroom, which I think is just the bee’s knees. It’s a perfect hangout for the dogs during the day, not to mention a great place to read and knit. Plus, it has a built in brick planter!

Finally, there’s the backyard, and the future home of Yarn Nerd.

The backyard definitely needs some work, but the structure is there, including sunken vegetable planters and a sprinkler system. I’m actually really excited to revamp it and make it my own little suburban oasis. I haven’t decided what to do with it yet, but my Mom is a certified Master Gardener, so I’ll have plenty of help :)

That ends today’s tour, I hope you enjoyed it! I’m practically ecstatic, and have so many cool ideas for the house, I can hardly write them down fast enough. If you have any house/decorating/garden tips, I’d love to hear them.

(Hopefully we’ll get back to actual knitting content soon…which means I need to get the yarn stash out of its mammoth box…)

Definitely go with the sage on the bedroom walls. I wouldn’t try putting in too much grass in the yard….our friends in Albuquerque just finished eliminating most of the grass in theirs and their water bill is much happier! Great house; have fun!!!

  2. 2 Kat

Buying a house is certainly like a nightmare roller coaster, but actually living in it is totally worth it. (Other than all the work..I got into a fight with the lawnmower last weekend) Hope you enjoy your new house!!

  3. 3 Kim U

Congratulations! Love the house, especially that sunroom. I agree with Beth, I like the idea of sage in the bedroom.

  4. 4 maryse

i say sage in the bedroom too. or something completely different that contrasts nicely with those pretty linens. sweet house. congratulations.

  5. 5 turtlegirl76

I vote for sagey green. As your future wife, I think I should have that choice. ;)

The house looks great! Look at all that storage space! And cool brick planter on the patio! Very cool!

Adam, congratulations! It’s a really lovely place. And I know what you mean about signing your name a million times. You’re sure your hand will fall off by the time you are done.

And definitely sage green on the walls. It’s more neutral if you get bored with the linens at some point.

  7. 7 alyson

    Congratulations!!!

  8. 8 tiennie

Congratulations Adam! Your house is awesome! How fun and exciting!

  9. 9 Kath

Sweet! I agree with everyone who said sage green for the walls, but you could always do a sky blue ceiling too! The floors are kinda making me drool a little, but bathrooms with updated plumbing fixtures and laundry rooms affect me on an emotional level. (Other women dream of trips to Paris, I fantasize about washer/dryer hookups - sue me.) Congrats on the house - you’ll have such a blast making it really your own!

  10. 10 Ashley W

Congratulations! I’m utterly jealous of your kitchen and sunroom. Definitely post more pictures after you paint. I also can’t wait to see what your backyard looks like in a few months. :)

  11. 11 Kate

Woo hoo! Congrats on finally being a homeowner! Good luck choosing colors…we’ve been in the new house over a year now and it took us 6 months to decide on what colors to paint the basement (which still isn’t paint ready)!

    Just an aside…great taste in mayo…I <3 TJ’s Wasabi Mayo! It’s the best! :-)

  12. 12 Jenni

Its just lovely! Congrats! I can’t wait to see what you do with the backyard!

  13. 13 scoutj

    Oh it looks awesome!!!

  14. 14 Ashley

Awesome! You lucky duck. Lots of room for fiber and puppies, and I LOVE the floors.

I vote for sky blue. I’ve lived in sage green houses my whole life, though, so I could just be biased. :-)

  15. 15 Zonda

Congratulations!! Great house! Yeah, I like sagey green too! My living room is that color. :)

  16. 16 Beverly

    Congratulations! It’s fabulous!

  17. 17 Laura

Like everyone else, I vote sage green for bedroom walls. Blues are pickier…and don’t always blend with other things (like linens) as nicely.

Great house; I love the tour. I had to laugh particularly over the rattan furniture…we had a set in my parents’ basement that I had for years! It’s cushions were something really stylish like a very 70s green bamboo print. That sounds better than it was, actually.

While I’m jealous of the house as a whole, you won me over with the sunroom…and the laundry room. I can dream of having my own SOME day, right?

  18. 18 Cat

    OH Adam how exciting!!! Congrats!!!!

    Hugs!!!

  19. 19 Bex

Congratulations! It looks like you are going to have a lot of fun with your new house!

  20. 20 Ashely

I ordered a skein of yarn from you a while back and I never said thank you! So, “Thank you!” It’s lovely and I just can’t decide what to do with it. It has to be something really good. :) Congratulations on your new home! That’s so exciting. I agree with everyone else, sage green DEFinitely.

  21. 21 dputiger93

Don’t kill yourself trying to get it all done at once, but it looks like you have a great head start! Enjoy the new digs. You’ve earned it! :)

  22. 22 michelle

I’m another one saying go with the sage! What a lovely house, I absolutely love that planter in the sun room. Congratulations!

  23. 23 Swapna

I seem to be in a minority here, but, sky blue gets my vote.

  24. 24 mom

You know I vote for the green paint color…blue is too cool a color for a bedroom! The green will be more relaxing! The photos of the house look great, and it even looks better in person! So proud of you…it is such a great accomplishment to buy a house at your age! You should be proud of your new abode! When are you having us over for dinner…after all that moving and cleaning I think you owe us!!! Dad says steaks sounds good!

    Love ya~

  25. 25 chrispy

Enjoy the new house. It looks totally awesome.

  26. 26 glittrgirl

Lovely place - so light and airy! What kind of fabric you going to redo the rattan with? I would go for something quite mad, retro and hawaiian…. that goes with sage green….

  27. 27 nicole

OMG how lovely! I’d actually say blue for the bedroom. My office space is light blue and I love it. However, my living room is orange/terracotta and my bedroom is dark red, so, you know… I’ll maybe paint my sons room this summer and I’m thinking blue, too. Nice and calming and all that. Probably a darker blue though.
Anyway: That planter totally rocks and the garden looks like there’s lots of potential. Plant some berries (gooseberries, blackberries and raspberries, if they grow in our sand they’ll probably do fine wherever you are ;-) )

  28. 28 lisa

Congratulations Adam! I am always intrigued by regional differences in houses, so thanks for the tour! I’m generally not a fan of blue (though I like to put a bright blue in the bathroom…cool and watery, you know?), so I’d say green, but greens are hard! Be sure to put lots of sample chips on the wall, remove the ones you definitely don’t like, then when you’re down to a good amount fewer, move the chips to another wall, and keep doing this (moving them around, especially at different times of day or the times you’ll most be in the room). And don’t try to match your linens… might make the room look plainer rather than give it a spark. I will have to try to post some room pics to show you this… I lightly sponged the bedroom and ceiling. Needs a lot of work and I wasn’t up for it, so 99 cents of paint and an hour or two transformed the place. The ceiling was most interesting… I sponged a very very pale blue, and when I was done it looked like I’d sponged on peach… because the blue looked white and the old dirty white now looked like linen/peach. Very odd. But a nice effect. I’ve been wanting to cover our beige couch in something tomato/chinese red, so I say go for it with the cushions. Those on your couch remind me of the 80’s stuff of my folks. Is the pale floor under the table at a different height or the same as the rest? Your kitchen may be bigger than mine! I put a buttery yellow on the kit and din rm walls, Benjamin Moor 926 I think. We basically have an expanded galley, which works very well. Is that a doggy door on the dining room door? Score! on that bed! I was very glad when I gave up the futon. I put the mattress on the futon frame…works great. Have fun!

  29. 29 lisa

    Will you xeriscape the yard?

  30. 30 Nichole D.

Mega congrats!! It looks great. Oh, and my vote for the bedroom walls is the sage green color. Awesome stuff! Woo!

  31. 31 Mandy

Awesome house! Thanks for the tour. I LOVE your kitchen table and chairs.

  32. 32 Preita

Seems like we took possesion of our new houses the same week! Congrats! The first house is amazing! I’m praying that this is our last move for the next couple of years. We have had 6 address in 5 years, and I’m tired. I’m really amazed that you have already finished unpacking O_O. I still have so much to do. Course we are two people and one of us (the mr) is a pack rat.

Your house is completely awesome. I hope you update us with how you finally settle into it.

  33. 33 Trish

Love you new place. Thanks for the tour. I’d love to have a sunroom. The yard definitely needs work but it will be very rewarding to plan and work it yourself. Can’t wait to see what you do with the place.

  34. 34 lesley

YAY!!! Congratulations hun!!! Love it!!! Go with sky blue in the bedroom. It is a calming color. ;-)

  35. 35 J.P.

Congratulations, my friend! Enjoy your new home! :)

  36. 36 lynette

    Congratulations!!! it looks wonderful.

  37. 37 anne

congratulations and enjoy! yay for a new bed!

  38. 38 Stephanie

Congrats! I’m amazed by how much you accomplished in such a short time! I think you will do wonders with the place in the months and years to come. Happy homeownership!

  39. 39 Tiny Tyrant

Bedroom: Both, Wide Vertical Color Stripes separated by thin white. i.e. wide sage green, thin white (like the width of the masking tape used to make the wide stripes), wide sky blue, thin white, wide sage green, thin white. Make it so that one set of opposing walls start thin white, sage green and end with green and thin white, and the other two opposing wall start with thin white and blue and end with blue and thin white. Make sense?

If that’s too much effort, first set of opposing walls, green, other set the blue. Still get both with less work. :-)

It’s gorgeous Adam. You did good.

  40. 40 leslie

    ahhh!! totally exciting!!!
congratulations! i love the kitchen too. but oh, that sunroom! looks like the perfect amount of light.

  41. 41 Andrea

  42. 42 Emily

Congrats!! What a cool house! I hope you enjoy making it your own.. an exciting, frustrating adventure that will keep you up nights.. but so worth it!

  43. 43 holly

Wow, you really have a house! That is crazy. Congratulations! I always feel guilty when I’m not around to help people move, so I’m sorry I couldn’t be there, but it sounds like you have lots of non-slacker friends.

Who are you living with these days, Tony? Oh, and can you really get whole-hearted agreement from another part of your body (besides your heart)? ;)

    Miss you!

  44. 44 Vanessa

Just wanted to say congratulations on the house - exciting! - and for the bedroom, I’d go with the green.

  45. 45 Dawn

  52. 52 Jennie

    Congrats Adam!!

  53. 53 Jewel

Congrats on your house, just found your blog. I ordered your Caterpillar sock kit and just got it the yarn today its beautiful. Thanks!!

  54. 54 Lisa

I’m just a lurker, but my bedroom is periwinkle blue and it is the BEST, most cheery color early in the morning. As someone who normally repaints the whole house every year, that color has stayed the same for 6 years and I’d paint it the same color again. It’s awesome, and a beautiful color at night too.

Also, is that sunroom furniture upholstered velvet? (or velour?) How do you get the dog hair off of it?

  55. 55 Amy

Congratulations, everything looks great!!! I love blue bedrooms.

  56. 56 Mike a/k/a Crafty Dad

Woo. Hoo. It’s official! The house looks great. Congratulations!!! I want that shed!

  58. 58 Christine

Moving in to a new home is one of the best feelings ever, and its probably the biggest project you’ll ever work on. The possibilities are endless… enjoy this time and congratulations!

  59. 59 magikquilter

I love the comment from mum…mybe cause I do similar things on my son’s blog…http://cjwriter.com/
and he is generally patint with me and treats me like any old commentor…you know with courtesey…warm with a little reserve…I love it!

Now congratulations…what a wonderffl space and so you already ….because I can see where the creative could change and improve things. The planter is interesting as I recently saw on a shoe on Foxtel where a designer and the house owner transformed one of those into a water feature and it worked a treat.

Have nnoooo idea about the bedroom paint ….think maybe it will come to you after you live with it awhile aand see how the sun and shadows play on the room….. loving your blog!
