Musical Interlude 21 Nov 07

Oy vey, where does the time go?! It’s already been 11 days since the last post, and Thanksgiving is looming in the foreground like a 30 pound turkey. Also looming is the impending deadline of my final project paper for my Multiuser Detection class, but we won’t discuss that…(shudder).

I’ve been busy knitting, and am almost ready for the big unveiling of my first sweater. I have a few finishing details left this afternoon, but I’m almost there, and I’m happy that I can wear it for Thanksgiving tomorrow! (And that a cold snap just moved in, cause I really don’t want to wear the sweater if it’s still 70 degrees!) It will also come in quite handy for a weekend trip to Chicago this Friday, in a repeat of last year’s trip. I’m going out with both of my brothers, and am actually going to see Over the Rhine play a double header. I’m super excited to see them again, and to have a weekend to explore Chicago with both of my brothers. And yet again, I will completely ignore the fact that finals are in 2 weeks. ;) Now let’s just hope that there’s not massive amounts of snow in the next few days like last year…

And to disguise the fact that I have no actual knitting content until the sweater unveiling, I’ll distract you with a bit of trivia about myself.

Have I ever mentioned that I play the violin?

betcha didn't know

I’ve been playing since I was 8, and it’s something I really love. One day when I was in 2nd grade, a middle school orchestra came to my school, and I was enamored with the violinists. I actually walked around for a few weeks with a ruler and pencil, pretending I was a famous violinist, so my Mom figured she should enroll me in lessons. Now 15 years later, I still love it, and hope that I’ll be playing well into my senior years. Just this week, I joined the Albuquerque Philharmonic Orchestra, a local amateur orchestra that plays just for fun. I’ve been wanting to join this orchestra for a while, but it hasn’t worked out with my schedule before. It’s been almost 2 years since I’ve played with an orchestra, and I really have missed it.

So who else plays an instrument? I’m thinking it’d be awesome to start a traveling group with knitting musicians. ;)

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving this year! I’m looking forward to the big gathering at my parent’s house. I made my own pumpkin puree last week, and will be baking some pumpkin pies, pumpkin cheesecake and roasting pumpkin seeds for the big meal. I can’t wait for my big baking session tonight, it’s gonna be loads of fun. There’s so many things I’m thankful for this year, and so many things God has given me, that it’s really hard to pick one thing. So I think I’ll just try to be thankful for all the simple pleasures, such as pumpkin pie, classical music and sweater knitting. Not to mention a great time of hanging out with friends and family.

Chicago! We’ll be happy to have you - dress warmly. It’s gonna be cold. I used to play viola and loved it dearly. I still have it, but the neck muscles are not as strong as they once were. And I forgot how to read the wonky tenor clef. You are a man of many layers.

I played clarinet in another life (elementary school), but it has been 20+ years since I attempted it, and I was never particularly good at piano either, despite several years of lessons. Good for you that you have kept up with the violin. Very impressive! HAPPY TURKEY!!

Ok, Adam plays the violin and listens to classical music, bakes, knits, dyes yarn and is super smart! And not to mention he’s cute! Is there a more perfect man? Oh, and I’m not coming on to you! Just saying…

I play the flute (have done so for 13 years), but I don’t play that often anymore - that’s the life of a wife and grad-student ;-) I’d love to play some more again, and I’m actually certain that I will at some point… just when, I don’t know!

I played the violin years ago - I wonder if I would be able to pick it back up after fifteen or so years of not playing at all? I can also sort of play piano, guitar, etc., but only for fun. :)

  6. 6 Zonda

I used to play the drums in HS. I always wanted to play the saxophone though! Can’t wait to see the sweater! Have a great Thanksgiving with your family! :)

I play the violin too (since I was 5)! I haven’t played in about a year, so if you’re serious about traveling group of knitting musicians I’m totally in.

Have fun in Chicago–one of my favorite places:)

I don’t know how into it your brothers would be , but you should go to Loopy Yarns on State Street!! Have a great time.

Well now, you just upped the sexy factor! Happy Thanksgiving, Adam! Have fun in Chicago!

Adam, please don’t leave me in suspense any longer!!! I’ve been reading your same blog for 11 days, waiting with baited breath to see if I (having left a very clever comment on your last blog) was one of the lucky winners of your very fabulous yarn … please don’t disappoint me … :)

  11. 11 Kristina

love violins too! When are you going to tell us who won the yummy yarn!

  12. 12 Kevin

I’m an opera singer. A professional even. I have to laugh when people call me a professional.

  13. 13 Amy

Ooh, enjoy Chicago and the sweater!

I play the flute, although not regularly enough anymore to be even amateur orchestra quality. I’d love to have an excuse to make playing a part of my daily routine, though. I think I could even convince Jacob not to eat the flute, at this point! :)

You’re on to me, I DO want to! ::grin:: My Da played the violin, and I love violin music - although I’ve been led astray by Natalie MacMaster and am now quite devoted to fiddlers (who are just violinists with an Appalachian or Cape Breton accent….) I play soproano (and tenor) recorder and have quite a repertoire of medieval music. I do not claim to play WELL, however! Can I play with your Knitters’ Orchestra on the easy pieces?

  15. 15 Mom

Ok, at the risk of embarassing my son, I must say that some day some wonderful young woman is going to wake up and realize what a wonderful catch Adam is…he is a great cook, an expert with knitting needles and yarn dye, a violin player, music lover, a dog lover, a guy who can clean a house like a pro (I know because I taught him, and he does windows and toilets too), he is handy and resourceful, he is abnormally smart, and he has a great job, he is a great conversationalist, he is a guy with a great moral and spirtual character, and he is handsome and very charming!!! What more could any girl hope for??? Sorry Adam, it had to be said…love ya~

  16. 16 Megan

Talk about multi-talented! I play tenor saxophone, although I haven’t picked it up in the last year :( I hope you had a great Thanksgiving, and I can’t wait to see the finished sweater!

  17. 17 Laura

You are seriously multi-talented. (And your Mom could write a really good classified…and I’m betting she doesn’t exaggerate, either!) As to your knitting musicians, I’m in for piano, or at least I used to be. Maybe when I get a real job instead of being a grad student I’ll be able to get a piano, too… (wistful sighs)

  18. 18 Tiny Tyrant

    Okay. So you…

knit (lovely stuff by the way) dye yarn for sale (stupid stupid yarn diet) be a doggy dad to Emma and Dallas (still waiting for post salon date pics thank you very much) work full time go to grad school AND you play a musical instrument.

Sigh. To be you when I grow up.

  19. 19 tiennie

I love how the violin sounds! Hope you had a great holiday!

  20. 20 Stephanie

I play the clarinet! Hooray for the idea of a musical knitting group! Will we knit between sets? (of course!)

  21. 21 nova

I have always wanted to play the violin. But my parents made me learn the piano instead. I am not sure how well a piano would travel…huh.
