Not Sitting on the Dock of the Bay 18 Sep 07

I don’t know if I’ve ever been happier for Monday to roll around than yesterday. Because this Monday brought with it the promise of a better week, one where I could ride my bike and sit on my butt without wincing. You never know what’cha got until it’s gone right? Well, let’s just say, you never know how much you appreciate having the ability to sit down until it becomes very painful. I don’t really want to go into details (because they are slightly more intimate than I prefer to reveal on this blog), but let’s just say I ended up having a minor procedure last week involving my tailbone and a scalpel. Ouch.

one bourbon, one scotch and one beer

My solace came in the form of doctor mandated hot baths, which can be very nice when paired with a scotch on the rocks. Thankfully, this week is already a lot better, and I’m almost back to normal. I can ride my bike again, and sit down at work without needing an IV of Ibuprofen (not really, but it would have been nice…).

And another reason to appreciate Monday? Why getting your “therapy for a crappy week” purchases of course! First up is this sweet shirt that I scored at Threadless. They printed this one a while ago, and it just got reprinted, so I jumped on it.

I think it’s also a sign of good things to come with my next grand transportation experiment, as I am now car-less for the week, and maybe next week too. It’s another long story, but someone hit me quite a few months back, and I’m finally just getting my car fixed now. It’s just body damage, but that means it’s gonna take a long time in the shop. Giving me the perfect opportunity to see how truly car-free I can be. My goal is to only bum rides off friends and family if absolutely necessary, otherwise I’ll take the bus and ride my bike everywhere else. I don’t think it should be too difficult, as I’m already riding my bike lots of places already, but I’m interested to see how it goes when the car safety net is no longer there. I’ll keep you updated.

My other “poor me, I can’t sit down” purchase is this lovely hand-spun yarn:

hot buttered rum indeed

I came across this link to Crumbs & Co. in one of Megan’s posts, and when I clicked over, I saw it. The very same skein of yarn I had seen on Flickr and drooled over was sitting right there, pleading with me to buy it. So I did. And now I have this lovely skein of yarn in my possession. It’s Merino spun up in DK weight and it’s absolutely exquisite. Go check out Crumbs for yourself, she has some awesome stuff!

And to top off my wonderfully good happy week, I took this awesome picture yesterday. Things are definitely looking up. Thank goodness for the ability to sit. And scotch.

You poor thing! I am glad you are feeling better. It all sounds very painful. The bath and scotch sound good though. Good luck being car free you will probably do better than most because you already ride. Love the photo! I admire people who can take good photos, I am not one of them. Also love the yarn. Makes me want to spin. Also makes me think of spinning up larger amounts so others can share in it. Hope you are fully recovered soon.

I’m sure “ouch” doesn’t even begin to describe it! Glad to hear you’re pampering yourself, and hope you feel 100% better soon!

  3. 3 Heather

I hope your bum bum feels better soon!

  4. 4 Beverly

Ohhh, I hope you feel even better fast! Good luck going car-free–sounds like you’ll do great!

Ouch!! I’ve known your pain!! Feel better soon! That is gorgeous handspun you scored!

Feel better! (you know they make donut shaped cusions for other problems involving sitting)

I long for the day when I don’t have to have a car. DC was a great city for that. Have fun with your bike adventure!

I hope you’re able to ride your bike without pain! Yeesh! That’s awful. I hope the injury involved depraved activities otherwise it just ain’t worth it.

That doesn’t sound like fun, but it sounds like you’re making the best of it! Feel better soon, and yeah … not much beats a good scotch on the rocks!

Well, it’s good that you’re on the mend. I’m rather glad you didn’t go into details, the ones you did give made me wince. Poor you.

I love that Threadless shirt. I only buy from them when they’ve got the $10 sale going, though.

Convalesce well. Loving that Crumbs yarn. I’ve been drooling over “speedy motorcycle”. Surprised you didn’t go for “vintage schwin” too :-)

More bath photos! I want all male knitbloggers in bathtubs! Glad to hear you’re back to better.

Great shirt… my work is going to launch something next week that I’ll have to send you. Your car-free experiment will mesh with it quite well.

Dang! I’ve heard that a damaged tailbone is really painful! But don’t worry, you don’t need the stupid bone anyway. It’s not like you have a tail that needs to be wagged (or how would I know, maybe you do). Good thing you’re not sitting on your tail when you ride your bike.

And good luck with the car experiment. Just wear your new t-shirt, and it will feel wrong to get into a car!

When I was single, I went years without a car. Bravo for you. Right now we limit any extra trips (outside hubby’s commute to work)to just what we absolutely have to and wait until we have several things to take care of so we’re not making tons of trips into town. Once I get this land cleaned up enough for my garden (the ppl who owned this place before us didn’t care where they threw trash)I will have my garden and that will cut down on trips to the store.

The yarn is yummy, almost dunk in coffee and eat yummy.

The sky picture is totally gorgeous.

Hope you feel better and your scotch doesn’t run out!

Feel better - and thank god for scotch! I second everyone else here - that yarn is yummy!

Ouch!! I’m glad you’re feeling better this week. That’s an extremely clever t-shirt. And gorgeous cloud picture!

  17. 17 stacey

Cute T-shirt - totally fits your situation! How envious that you could be car free - we have no public transportation and everything is so far away only by highway here..plus all that white stuff that comes every winter…That picture of the clouds is amazing…seems like you guys get different clouds in the desert - much prettier!

Glad you are healing. I broke my tailbone once and it took six months before it completely healed. Not fun for long car trips (of which there were several).

On the upside, that is a spiffy t shirt. I know many people who would love one.

Hi, I just recently found your blog through Megan. I love your yarn! I’m glad that you’re feeling better– I had a similar problem a few years ago, and it wasn’t fun. I just ordered that t-shirt for my fiance– he bikes to work too ;)

Glad you’re on the mend:) and hope you’ll be able to ride your bike pain-free.

The sky picture is gorgeous! Wow…it looks like scoop of vanilla ice cream…ok, now I’m hungry!

  21. 21 Rachel

Yeah, ouch is right! That’s a very uncomfortable procedure to recover from, but I’m glad you’re healing well and are able to sit again. Not being able to sit is a major downer, isn’t it?

  22. 22 tiennie

Aw dude. I hope you and your butt is doing fine now ( a sentence that I never thought I’d type!) Cool shirt. Purty yarn!

  23. 23 Janet

Glad to hear your on the mend. Good luck with you “no car” week. And the yarn - wow! Lucky you!

  24. 24 Ashley

Yowch! Glad to know that you are feeling better.

You are so lucky to live in a place where you can actually ride a bike. I live in the middle of Jacksonville, and a girl riding a bike is just asking for trouble. Last year we had around 200 murders alone, not counting other crimes!

Anyway, keep it up, and be careful not to hurt the tailbone again on the bike. :-)

OUCH. i hope your bum is better! and if not, just a little “refill” on the scotch. right? or perhaps, more yarn ;)
