Speed Reading 23 Jul 07

So I’m in the mood for a little contest. How about you? (Hehe, of course you are, since there’s yarn involved!)

All you have to do is venture your best guess as how fast of a reader I am. How long do you think it took me to finish Book 7?

heck yeah baby!

I’ll give you a hint. I finished sometime in the afternoon on Saturday, and I did take a 4 hour sleep break at one point during the marathon. Anyone? Bueller? Anyone?

I’ll pick 2 lucky winners who have the correct guess (guesses are open through Wednesday) and send them a skein of yarn (of your choice!) from the Yarn Nerd stock.

At any rate, the book was really really good, and I think it was a very fitting end to the whole series. I’m a bit sad that it’s over, but I’ll manage somehow. (Can you say His Dark Materials trilogy?)

I also got bitten by Second Sock Syndrome, and my love for the new Love and Peace or Else colorway, and cast on a new sock. The Tree Scum socks are still on the needles, but I used up the first skein and didn’t have the next one on me; but I did happen to have the Love and Peace yarn…(what a coincidence eh?) It’s going pretty fast anyhow; I’m at the heel already, and will probably be done with the first one in the next day or two. Maybe I’ll even try to set a personal sock record!

love and peace socks

It’s hard not to speed along when the knitting is this fun! Hopefully it will last through the second sock! ;)

I’m going to guess 9 hours. Simply because that was my time…and I really tried to read slow in order to make it last, but I guess that didn’t really work.
I already have His Dark Materials trilogy on hold at my library. I need a fix ;)

  2. 2 Trish

I’m going with 8 hours. I really need to get the book. Shock, gasp I haven’t bought my HP book…not by choice. :)

  3. 3 Alex

Oooh, that sock is looking nice! It’s in stock, but I can’t afford it right now. =(

So, are we counting in the nap with the time? I’m just going to guess that you started after you got home (a bit after midnight), took the nap in the morning, and then finished around 2pm.

  4. 4 Alex

Oh, and I’ve heard the first book of His Dark Materials is good, but the quality slacks off the in next two. I haven’t read them yet, but I probably will.

I will console myself with my Narnia books (again…this is probably the 30th time I’ve read them).

  5. 5 Beth

My guess is 6 hours. I finished it Saturday night and really loved the book. On Sunday it hit me though that it was really over and I was a little sad. I have a feeling I will be re-reading book 7 again soon.

  6. 6 alyson

Awww. I wanna win. But it would be unfair. tries being a good person for a change

Everyone’s feeling really contest-y right now! It’s great!!

  7. 7 Jenny Raye

    I’m going with 5.5 hours.

  8. 8 stacey

Love the His Dark Materials!!! I can’t wait for the movie of the first book to come out!

As far as reading goes, I’ll go with 9 hours (not including sleep time) - I tend to read books that I dont’ want to end a bit slower and savor them….

  9. 9 Heather

Clearly you read the book in 7.5 hours…

  10. 10 sarai.

    11 hours.

  11. 11 Chris

    Seven hours. :)

  12. 12 Frarochvia

    7 hours!

  13. 13 Becky

My guess is 7.25 hours. (really, I was going to guess 7 or 7.5 but split the difference)

Ended up taking me around 10 or so, I think. Loved that book!!!!!

  14. 14 Sarah R

Hmmmm… I was going to guess 7 and a quarter hours, but that’s been taken…and then re-figuring….hmmmm…that may be too short. I’ll guess 8 and a quarter hours. I think that would be just over a minute a page, right? Haven’t read it yet myself, but that seems like it might be close. Ish. Or not.

  15. 15 catsmum

    7 hours 10 minutes

  16. 16 Eve

I’m not taking a look at any other answers and I might be missing some instructions, but I don’t want to read to much of anything about Harry Potter in case there are accidental spoilers!

I’m going to guess 42 hours.

  17. 17 Connie

    I would say 6 hours, 39 minutes!

  18. 18 Amber

    7.5 hours. :)

  19. 19 Anne

I’m going to say 9 hours and 23 min.

  20. 20 Diane

    6 hrs

  21. 21 lisa

Hey Adam, I’m only on page 388 or so, so I’m glad you didn’t give anything away!!! I’m guessing you got the book at about midnight and read through the night, something a young college=ish age guy can do (not so me, I’ll fall asleep!). So, I’ll say it took you 13 hours and 13 minutes to finish. We really enjoyed ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy, we listened to them, maybe twice. Another great ‘kid’ series is the Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix. On audio it is read by Tim Curry, VERY good!!! I’m thinking I may READ it soon.

  22. 22 joy

    8 hours and 40 minutes.

  23. 23 Britt

    8.5 hours :-D

  24. 24 Just A Knit Wit

Hmm… we can assume that you began reading sometime between 12:45 and 1:30, depending on where you were in line, how far the book store is from your house and other sundry variables. I’ll take a guess at 3:45 in the afternoon you finished the book. Ew… now I have to do math!

Lets see… take that… minus the nap… carry the one… I’m going to guess 9 hours and 40 minutes, give or take a 10 minute window for bathroom and snack breaks.

  25. 25 P-la

I’m guessing 10 hours. It took me 12 exactly!

  26. 26 Debra

I say, 10.25 hours! After a spoiler call on Sunday morning (I was on pg. 335!), I sped through and finished on Sunday. You crazy, crazy reader! Saturday???

  27. 27 Katie

I guess 6 hours 27 minutes. It took me a little over 9, but I slept in big time on Saturday!

  28. 28 Susie

    7 hours 53 minutes…

  29. 29 Valerie

My guess is 5 hours and 15 minutes.

  30. 30 Vikkie

I am going to guess the time it took me…10

  31. 31 Katie

    7.5 hours!

  32. 32 Heide

My guess is 10 1/2 hours. After reading it I put in the audio version and now I’m listening to it while knitting, spinning, etc.

  33. 33 nishanna

I think it took you just over 7 hours. Maybe 7 hours and 20 minutes.

  34. 34 kelp!

I’ll venture 5 hours, but then I haven’t read the book, so I have no idea how long it is. That’s one fine looking sock!

  35. 35 Allison

    7.5 hours is my guess

  36. 36 Tanya

I did not read all the other guesses so i hope i am not repeating anyone…but 5 hours 35 minutes? (without the sleeping time of course!)

  37. 37 dale-harriet in wi

Let’s see…seven hours, 56 minutes. (I haven’t read the other guesses yet; hope that’s not a duplicate!) Took me across three days but that’s because I had RUDE INTERRUPTIONS, like an overnight visit from a nephew on his way back to school, and I felt obligated to…you know, prepare food, put sheets on the futon. I agree with your assessment, and I think now I will re-read Pullman’s Trilogy which is on my list of The FINEST Things I’ve Ever Read! I hear they’re making that into a movie and I haven’t decided if I’d see it or not. I know what everything looks like……

  38. 38 Christene

    My guess: 7 hours 15 minutes… I’m hoping to have a copy to start soon, but I don’t have it yet… :*(

  39. 39 Laura

My guess is 10 hours and 20 minutes. :) Awesome, wasn’t it? I’m totally going through withdrawal, slightly ameliorated by deciding I read it too quickly the first time and really need to go back over a few things (yeah, like the whole book)…

  40. 40 Claire

6.75 hours. and yes, love dark materials. wow

  41. 41 Rachel

I’m going to guess 11.5 hours. I’m being cheap and waiting for some friend to finish theirs before I read it.

  42. 42 Sharon

    I’m guessing 10 hours 25 minutes.

  43. 43 Sheri

    I’m guessing 9 hours and 45 minutes.

  44. 44 Haley

oooh, a contest. count me in. i’m guessing that you got the book at midnight and started reading by 12:30AM. If you finished in the afternoon, say around 2:30PM and you took a 4 hour sleep break then my guess is that it took you 10 hours to read Harry Potter. Which is very fast, not quite as fast as chemgrrl, but fast all the same. Hope I’m right. You’re yarn is beautiful and winning it would be just the motivation I need to knit my first sock.

  45. 45 Linda in Chicagoland

    10 hours 43 minutes

I’m a book behind, might have to get this on tape for an upcoming roadtrip. LUV Jim Dale (sp?) doing the reading.

  46. 46 Erin B

    6 5/6????

  47. 47 Gladys

I’m going to guess 9.5 hours. I just finished it this morning, but I’ve got two kids, and I needed to make sure they didn’t destroy the house. Or unravel my knitting.

  48. 48 Elspeth

I want to guess 3 hours. I didn’t read the other commenters so I don’t know if they already guessed that or not yet.

  49. 49 Anne

I am going to to assume you read as fast as I do, 150+ pages per hour so my guess is 5 hours.

  50. 50 Erin

I’m guessing 7 hrs and 21 minutes. I have to wait until I get it from my sister, we take turns buying the books, and it was her turn this time. (NO SPOILERS PLEASE)

  51. 51 rhelynn

8 hours 45 minutes. It took my husband somewhere between 8 and 9 hours, and he is a speed reader too :) He took a few breaks here and there, and that is our guess.

  52. 52 tiennie

    How about 6 1/2 hours?

  53. 53 lesleyd

Wow!! I’ll guess 9 hours 45 minutes. it has been a WHILE! since I’ve read a book in one sitting even with a break.

Best wishes on not getting SSS!!!!

  54. 54 Anne

I’m going to guess 6 hours, 56 minutes. (Not including the nap, of course.)

  55. 55 turtlegirl76

I’m pretty sure Pam’s time of 5 hours 32 minutes will have us all beat. I think you’re probably closer to me in reading speed (which is still pretty damn fast but I do at least get up and go to the bathroom sometimes) so I’ll say 9 hours and 10 minutes.

  56. 56 Kenyetta

I am guessing 9 hrs, that’s including the 4 hr nap!

  57. 57 5elementknitr

My lucky number’s 13, so I’m going to guess 8 hrs. 14 min. (It adds up to 13, yea, I’m a geek.)

  58. 58 Elemmaciltur

Okay….I’ll guess that you got through it within 10 hours. I like His Dark Materials, too…but I didn’t like the end.

  59. 59 jenfromri

My guess is 10.5 hours. That would put the finish at about 2:30 Saturday afternoon (considering the 4-hour sleep break), which is about whe I finished. So, yeah, there’s my thought process. I’m glad you enjoyed it!

  60. 60 Heddy

    I am guessing 8 hours 42 minutes … I haven’t read it yet

  61. 61 Wannabe

    7.5 hours

  62. 62 Holly of HollYarns

I’d say 4.5 hours to read the book!

  63. 63 Emma

    10.75 hours?

  64. 64 Jennie

What a fun contest! Hmmm, let’s go with 8 hours. :) Your sock is looking fantastic. I really like the color combo. :)

  65. 65 Jennifer

I’m going to guess 9 hours.

  66. 66 Nicole

I’ll guess that it took you 9 hours and 37 minutes.

  67. 67 Madame Purl

    I’m going with 7 hours.

  68. 68 Danni

    9 hours 23 minutes.

  69. 69 JulieFrick

No guesses here, as you would automatically disqualify my HP-doubting ass (though I’m SO glad to see you’re coming over to the “Dark” side now), AND because you’ve already been SO generous to me!!! And I didn’t realize that the yellow/brown was named after your pup and not the city- so cute!

  70. 70 scout

    7 hours and 44 minutes.

  71. 71 Christy

    8hrs 15 min

  72. 72 scott

    4 hours. ship it

  73. 73 Phoebe

I started reading mine when I got home at 2:01 and got thru 60 pages in 20 minutes but slowed down as I wanted to savor the book rather than rush through it. So if I had continued on and had taken a break for 4 hours to sleep I would have read the book in 4 hrs & 30 minutes, so that is my guess.

  74. 74 Rae

    I’m going to guess 11 hours…

  75. 75 pamela wynne

    10 hours!

  76. 76 Jess

    I’ll guess 10 hours.

  77. 77 Robin

I am going to guess 6 hours and 43 minutes.

  78. 78 gray la gran

i’m going to guess 13 hrs. because i haven’t a clue! i am the world’s sloooowest reader, and it takes me at least 2 months to read a good sized book ;) i also only save my reading for bedtime … and sometimes i read a paragraph, and sometimes i read 50 pages. now that you’re done, get back to socken knittin’ ! ;) ps. i love the name “tree scum”.

  79. 79 Elspeth

Oops, I didn’t even notice the 4 hour sleep break. So that would make my guess at -1 hour ;) You took out your wand and zapped it right into your brain, plus an hour!

  80. 80 Kris with a K

    I’m going with 6 hours 45 minutes.

  81. 81 Mom

    Wow Adam,
You have 81 comments on this post!!! That must be a record. Lots of folks want some free yarn!
I can’t guess because I already know how fast you read the book. Besides I’m sure you have some kind of rule about family members winning…or do you???

    Love ya

  82. 82 Carla

    Hi Adam:

OK, my guess is 10 hours, since that’s about how long it took me to finish it!

I’m loving the HP-themed sock yarn you created for me and so now I am a fan of yours and I really do want some free yarn, so I hope I am right…

    Carla
