Has it really been 9 days? Yeesh, bad blogger, no cookie! I was reminded of my extended absence by my Mom, with the kind words, “Hito, you need to write a new blog post, it’s been a week!” Ah, just like the days when we had to do journal assignments for school, what fond memories. ;) Anyway, here you go Mom, I’ll try not to neglect the blog for so long next time…but there are only so many “I’m working on gift knitting and reading books” posts that you can do without becoming tragically boring. (Not that all my posts are eloquent prose, but there’s a fine line that differentiates a mundane post from one that is capable of causing your eyes to hemorrhage.)
So what could I talk about that won’t cause your eyes to hemorrhage? How about a family evening of ruthless competition good fun?
See, last night was the weekly family get together, and we had decided to go out and do something, but were somewhat at a loss on what to do. Movies are expensive (and deciding on a movie everyone will see is nothing short of a miraculous feat), I’m really the only one who likes Indie Rock shows in small dives, and my Mom was swimming pooled out since she’s been taking my cousins a few times a week. So what do you do in Albuquerque on a Thursday night with 6 people, once swimming, movies and concerts are ruled out? Apparently, you go bowling!
Now I was a bit reluctant initially, since I was in a grouchy mood, and I’m as good at bowling as a fish is at flying, but I was persuaded by one phrase: “but you could have a beer at the bowling alley!” I’m not sure it’s a good reflection on me, that I was enticed to go bowling by the promise of beer, but what can I say? I’m a beer geek! ;) I did make sure that everyone agreed I was allowed to photograph them bowling, so that I could have something to show off to the Internets.
And without further ado, may I present my parents, the bowling champions!
Now I didn’t really know what to expect, but I figured that I might be able to school my parents, even with my meager bowling skills. Well was I ever wrong! They were awesome! I guess that just means you get better at bowling with age, ha! I was pretty proud of myself too, since I broke my all time record of 50 points (I told you I was awful!) and got a 64 and then a 73. Not quite my Dad’s high of 150 something, but not too shabby considering my bowling history. (I’ve managed to throw the ball backwards and trip and slide down the lane before…) My Mom thought I would be really good since, “you can understand the math behind it”, but I had to remind her that understanding the physics and translating that into movements are two different things. At least for my uncoordinated body they are!
I think now that we’ve gone bowling, we’ll have to go to a math competition or something next, so I can beat everyone at something! You hear that family? You may have beat me at bowling, but it’s on like Donkey Kong!
We now return you to your regularly scheduled blog post.
Be sure to go check out Yarn Nerd this weekend, since I’m having a 15% off sale! It was originally supposed to last through today, but I think I’ll extend it through Sunday to help clear out some more stock for next week’s update. I’m not sure on the date yet, but it will most likely be Thursday at 10 AM MDT. I’ll post more details when I know them.
And in exciting blog news, I bought a new camera! It’s on it’s way here now (DHL may ban my IP address since I’m refreshing the tracking page so often…), and it’s a beaut. A Nikon D50 with 2 lenses that I got for quite a lovely price on eBay. I did a lot of photography when I was a teenager (that’s so strange that I can refer to my teenage years in the past tense.) and am really looking forward to getting back into it. I’ve been saving up and searching for a good deal, and when this one came along I couldn’t pass it up. Plus, I’ve been using cameras borrowed from friends and family up to this point, so it’ll be nice to have something of my own to play around with.
Alright, I gotta go, time to check the DHL page again! Have a great weekend everyone :)
PS: Have you seen what Carole has sitting in her office? OMG! I offered her free sock yarn for life if she just nipped me one copy, but she has more moral fiber than I anticipated. Anyone else care to mount an assault?

I’m so ‘good’ at bowling that I have no idea if you want a high score or a low score! We did a lot of candlestick when we were kiddos, you think I’d remember. I think I drooled all over my keyboard when I saw what Carole has! I have been feeling like a kid anticipating xmas or something with the new movie (loved it) and new book. That blue bowling alley floor is pretty neat!
I am so with you - bowling is HARD! My high score ever is somewhere around 60 also. And this is kind of embarrassing but one of the shameful moments of my life came in 10th grade on a school trip when I was beaten at bowling by a friend of mine… who was on crutches at the time. He had to hobble up to the lane on his crutches, then someone else would carry the ball and hand it to him, and he bowled off his one good leg, and HE BEAT ME. hangs head
Oh, congrats on the new camera! Yeah, I told Carole I’d be breaking into her office if I was closer…
Oh man, how will I resist? I’m being really insanely good and sticking to my yarn diet…but I LOVE Hot Dog On A Stick and I covet it very very much.
Tell your dad a girl beat his best score; my high game is a 201!! (Then tell him to be proud anyway, because he’s stomp my butt now - I stink! The good scores were back when I - wait for it - worked at the lanes!! Hee - fun crappy high school jobs rule!) And yay for you for beating that score; considering your old high, you really shattered it!!!
Dude, now I totally want to go bowling.
You’ve tripped and slid down an alley before?! I always thought I was a little klutzy, but compared to you maybe not.
I want to go bowling now. (You go bowling in St. Louis when you’ve ruled out concerts, movies, and swimming, too.) I’ve got my own ball and shoes, but my brother’s the expert. His high score is whispers enviously289/whisper. Mine is a not too shabby 176.
I’ll go with you to sneak into Carol’s office! I just saw the latest movie today, but I was/am anticipating the book much more.
the first time i went bowling with my brand new coworkers, i fell headfirst down the lane. and scored in the 40’s i think. so there.
hey, i nicked a pair of bowling shoes in highschool. they looked just like the ones you were wearing. except i sprayed mine with silver glitter spray paint. they were very stylish at the time. well, my friends and i thought they were anyway. i wore them for almost a year. i think my mom threw them away. she was horrified that her daughter was wearing (stolen) rental shoes.
ps
the D50 is a great camera! how exciting. get a tripod. it makes yarn photos SO much easier :).
I fully expect a series of bowling-related yarn colorways now. :)
Nice job bowling! But what is it with parents? My dad’s always telling me about his 200+ games, and I’m lucky if I break 50.
Can’t wait to see what you do with the new camera! It sounds wonderful.
I used to bowl in a league when I was a teenager (see, I can do that too, the whole past tense thing.) My high score was 203. My proudest moment was when I picked up the 6 4 split. Yeah baby. Fear the turtle. Someday I’ll come out and visit you and I’ll be on your team. We’ll totally beat your parents.
I do that with shipping tracking sites, too! Looks like you had fun bowling.
Hate to break it to you, but you couldn’t be tragically boring if you tried!!
your mom is way more tactful than mine regarding the blog update … my mom just says, “i’m tired of looking at THAT picture !”
hey … you could knit some bowling socks
remember the gracie ennis (sp?) patterns of the 50’s ? they’re all intarsia
if it makes you feel better, once i bowled a 19. yes, a 19! what can i say, my ball and the gutter were having a love affair.
Hey dude,
I told you that picture made my back side look way too big!!! You should never take a photo of someone from that angle! It was a fun night! And I must say your bowling skills improved as the night went along! Your brother Koury bowls like a gorilla!
I have one question…how’s the scarf coming along??? Fall will be here soon and I’d love to wear last years Christmas present before Christmas of 08!!!!
Your loving Mother
I said scarf, but I meant shawl…would you correct that for me mister computer guy!
hi Adam, if you get a snip from Carol, please send me some.
Tell Mom, nothing wrong with the pic of her bowling. a classic action shot.
take care
Enid
We have been Wii bowling up a storm here! Can’t wait to see your photos with your new camera!
If you get tired of bowling you should go roller skating. That’s not only a fun family activity, it makes for great blog photos. Especially when somebody falls and breaks a limb. The photos of the emergency room wait alone are worth posting.
I am friends with the bumpers. lol It was the only way that I ever managed to get more than a 50 myself.
