So you know when you don’t talk to someone for a while, and you have a lot to catch up on, but you don’t really know where to start? That’s about how I feel, even then it’s only been a week since my last post. (Although in the Interwebs, 7 days is pretty much like an era!) It seems like my life has been nothing but school this week…and maybe it seems like that because it’s true!
I’ve just been chugging along, getting ever so close to that light at the end…even though it still feels like I’m going in circles. I did finish classes today, now I just have 3 finals to go. Sadly, the last take home final isn’t assigned until the 2nd to last day of finals week, so I still have 8 days before I’m free and clear. And no sooner will I get there than I’ll be starting preliminary thesis research for the summer, so it won’t really ever end. Such is the life of a grad student I suppose. Just one more year…one more year…
It hasn’t been all work and no play this last week though, I did get to do a lot of work with these lovelies:
I’m not exactly the biggest green thumb in the world, but I’m trying to learn. It also helps to have a Mom who’s pretty much the gardening queen of the universe. Just a little.
I planted a container with flowers, a container with some Lamb’s Ear (I’m not sure whether to be enamoured or creeped out by this stuff) and grasses, and the coup de grace: an herb garden. There’s nothing than I love more than some fresh herbs, and now I have a little herb store in my front yard!
I think all those lovely flowers should suffice for Eye Candy Friday, don’t you?
I also have a bit of fiber love to spread too. First up, check out the Tree Scum yarn that Anne spun for me! Isn’t is amazing? We’re doing a hand-spun for hand-dyed trade, and I’m super excited since I’ve never knit with handspun before. I can’t wait to dye her yarn so we can trade and I can get to the knitting! Second, it’s another FO made with Yarn Nerd yarn! Teresa knit up this gorgeous Clapotis with some of my 900 MHz Merino in the Berrylicious! colorway. _Isn’t it awesome?_
In other fiber news, I finished my first Broad Spiral Ribbed sock the other day, and immediately cast on for the second. I’m not sure if I could ever allow myself to fall prey to Second Sock Syndrome…I think the guilt alone would cause me severe anguish. Anyway, I love this sock and can’t wait to finish the pair.
I used a Slip Stitch Heel with Garter Edges and a Round Toe (definitely a new favorite). The Broad Spiral Rib pattern is from More Sensational Knitted Socks. This Austermann Step yarn is nice, but I’m not quite sure that the “Aloe and Jojoba enriched” claims are entirely true. Although the colors are so nice, I think I’ll forgive the marketing speak.
I’m glad the previous weekend was relaxing, because I think that this weekend will definitely have a significant portion of take home finals and math books. Do you have anything fun planned?

Yes. Sheep and Wool. Both days.
The garden it b-u-tee-ful! Trying to improve on a green thumb is working for you for sure! Weekend plans..yes! margaritas & fajita party at my house for cinco de mayo! WOOHOO. have a great weekend, and try to squeeze in some fun time!!!
I am spending this whole weekend working on my thesis!!
Oh wait, you said fun. Nevermind. Anyway, good luck with the plants - I’ve always wanted my own herb garden too, I hope yours treats you well. :)
I love the garden pictures, and the sock look great! It’s pretty much a holiday weekend here, what with the Kentucky Derby, so I’m going to stay up to go to the late showing of Spider-man 3, and then sleep in tomorrow before I hit a Derby party. And then, because I can’t stray too far from my boring roots, I’ll probably come home early to avoid the traffic and do some knitting.
Hope the finals go well!
That sock is hot, lol. I love the colorway. As for the garden, lets just say I am a wee bit jealous.
My weekend? Work all day saturday (9-6ish), and then my best friend who I have not seen in a year and a half is flying down. Major awesomeness right there.
I hope you find a LITTLE time to relax between schoolwork.
Yeah, lambs ear is freaky, huh? I’m not sure how I feel about it either. i sort of love toughing it, but it feels incredibly unnatural. It’s the sort of thing that might grow to gargantuan proportions and wrestle you to death.
i think your garden and your socks are beautiful!
The sock is fantastic! Must put that pattern on the list :o)
Your socks and flowers are very nice Adam! Not much longer with the finals and you’re home free!
I feel your grad school pain. It sucked when I did it and cannot imagine ever doing it again. Comps are the worst torture ever designed in Academia. I hope you at least get a few weeks of rest and mental vacation.
The yarn came! The yarn came! Pics over on the blog, and chat about ds recognizing instantly your ‘thanks for your order’ label! Go Adam Go! Be enamored of the lamb’s ear, it’s stuff like ‘lungwort’ that give cause for the creeps. I mean I can see how folks would know what a lamb’s ear looks like, but lungs? Guess they cut animals up more way back then. Enjoy the weekend, and THANKS!!
Hi Adam - Love the flowers. Come visit my blog to see the custom skein and my thanks!
Nice eye candy! :)
No kidding, between the lovely plant and the cool sock, you totally covered Eye Candy! Good luck on the finals.
wonderful green things! Enjoy the gardening, looks like you’re off to a great start. I have a skein of the austerman aloe/jojoba in my stash and was wondering the same thing about their “claims” but it is pretty yarn. Good luck with finals, socks, and research.
wow, your garden looks great. the dogs have trashed mine- i don’t even bother anymore.
what beautiful handspun! you’ll love knitting with it. it has such a nice, squishy feel. that was an awesome trade. if you ever need more handspun i can hook you up! and that clapotis? wow!! how pretty.
Hi Adam (delurking here),
I have a question about that lovely toe. How does it work exactly? Are the increases every row on each side once you start? Do you increase more than one stitch on each side? It’s so lovely and rounded that I just had to ask.
Nice garden, by the way.
The yard is looking sweet! Keep up the good work. Just a few more days, and finals will be behind you!!! I’m praying for you. Love ya Mom
Bravo for you. I’ve got a black thumb myself. Send some of that good green karma my way will ya?
best of luck with finals!
