Cough, Ouch! 30Mar07

I guess it’s going around or something. First Carole’s daughter, then Scout, and now me! I’ve had a sore throat most of the week, but it seemed to be getting better, until it got the best of me this morning. I woke up and knew that I wouldn’t be going to work today. I think it might have been the hacking cough coupled with sharp pain that tipped me off.

bleck.

So anyway, I now join the ranks of the sick, and will be hanging out at home for most of the day. I suppose it’s not all bad, since now I can catch up on BSG and get some knitting done. :) I’m very anxious to finish this sock, mostly since I’ve ripped it out about 5 times now. Gauge has definitely conspired against me for this sock, but I finally have beaten it, and will soon finish a lovely Jaywalker, knit toe-up with a short row heel in my 1500 MHz Sport Sock Merino. It’s quite nice, and I’m looking forward to knitting the other sock, now that I’ve figured out all the weird gauge issues. (This of course assumes my feet are somewhat the same size. If this assumption is wrong, then I’m screwed.)

I also have a confession to make. I’m a bad father. Emma’s birthday was last week (the 22nd), and I completely spaced it until this week. I know some of you might think it’s a bit odd, but I felt bad that I didn’t get a cake or anything! When I’m going to dog obedience class every week I always remember, since we are allowed to bring cakes and treats for our dog’s birthdays, but my schedule this semester has prevented me from being a regular. I suppose not all is lost, since Emma doesn’t know it was her birthday, so if I get the cake and celebrate a bit later, she won’t mind ;)

So Happy Birthday Emma! You’re 14 in dog years now! And just as ornery as a human teenager! ;)

Emma - 2 Years Old!

And speaking of birthdays, Happy Birthday Scout! Hope you feel better too, cause sickness is the suck.

I’m off to drink some more water, blow my nose, pop some pills and cozy up to a dog or two. This would be the perfect day if all the sickness was gone!

Off The Radar 23Mar07

Wow, has it really been a week since my last post? Jeez! Things have been totally insane this last week, but it’s finally slowed down a bit, so I’m very thankful for that. I won’t bore you with the details, but just suffice to say that not doing much over Spring Break + 2 Midterms Due on the same day makes Adam a very busy guy.

That fact essentially makes this a fluff post. There’s no real content, so I’m going to distract you with pictures, since that usually seems to work. Here’s some shots from the wedding!

And here’s a fun one, showing off a strange family tradition, that was started by Koury and Victoria. See, they’re always taking pictures of each other, so they started doing this pose where you give a thumbs up, say “Ting!”, and possibly wink. Well, it caught on, and now Ting!, is used for many different things in the family, from greetings, to approvals, to picture poses. Needless to say, we had to do a Ting! shot in our fancy clothes. Someday I’ll enlighten you about our other weird vocab word…hito…but that will require it’s own blog post ;)

I’ll have a more substantial post soon…progress is continuing on my Frankenstein Jaywalkers, especially now that midterm season is over!

Spring Socks! 16Mar07

Check it out! There’s buds on them thar bushes!

I know that this sight makes my Mom very happy (read: gardening!), and it makes me glad as well. I do enjoy winter, but I also love when the weather gets warmer and the days get longer. I guess I shouldn’t rub it in, since there are those of you still buried in snow, but it’s been in the high 60s these past few days, and it’s wonderful. There’s trees budding out everywhere you look, which means that some people are coughing and sniffling like you would never believe.

And I know this might seem somewhat counter-intuitive, but the arrival of Spring makes me want to knit like a crazy man. See the sock in the bush there? It’s a highly modified Jaywalker design I’m trying out. This version is sport weight yarn (more Yarn Nerd yarn, yay!), and I’m knitting it toe up and am planning to do a short row heel. We’ll see how it comes out, I’ll keep you posted!

Well, I think I’m gonna go rent a movie, grab some dinner and sit down with the sock. Not to mention two dogs. Have a good weekend everyone!

Happy Pi Day Everyone!

Pi

That’s right, I said Π day. See, it’s March 14, and this post was published at 1:59 PM, and the first 6 digits of the number Π are 3.14159. (If you do not know what Π is, then I suggest you run before I club you with a bat. Or at least go read the Wikipedia article to educate yourself.)

I know it’s nerdy, but I just have to pay homage to the wonderful number that I use every single day. Π, without you, the universe would explode, so we’re very grateful you’re around.

I like how this guy in the piday.org forums puts it:

I love Pi because I believe God put it there to give us a tiny, tiny glimpse of infinity. The circle also illustrates this. How else can we begin to start to imagine His ineffable character? And He’s so much more beyond this….

Also, did you know it’s Albert Einstein’s birthday today? Coincidence? I think not!

Speechless 11Mar07

After such an amazing weekend, it’s hard for me to really sum up my thoughts and condense a weekend full of emotion and elation into one tiny blog post. But I’ll try my best.

The wedding was beautiful and it was truly an honor to be a part of it and share the role of Best Man along with my little brother Clay. It was a big family affair, with over 250 people in attendance. One of the coolest things about the wedding was how much it meant for my whole family. My Dad is a Pastor and performed the ceremony, which was so very cool. I also don’t think I’ve cried that much in such a long time. When she walked down the aisle and he saw her for the first time that day, he just lost it, and I did too. I cried, my brother cried, my Mom cried and even my Dad cried. It was a very emotional day, not because we were sad, but just because we were so happy for him to be marrying the woman he loves.

They’re truly an amazing couple and I think the only way to truly honor their marriage is to tell you a little bit about them.

the happy couple during rehearsal

My brother Koury is a guy who has always been there for me, and has been my best friend since we were little kids. We’ve always wondering why it is we get along so well, since we’re so different. He’s into sports…me not so much. He and I can’t ever agree on movies or music, and we definitely don’t like the same types of books. He’s all right brain where I’m all left brain. Yet we (along with my little brother Clay) can hang out together, tell each other anything and love each other no matter what. I couldn’t ever fathom not being best friends with both of my brothers, and I’m so proud of both of them. It’s for these reasons and many more that I’m so happy to see him marry his soulmate.

a few words of wisdom from my Dad, during rehersal

Victoria completes Koury in so many ways, sometimes it’s hard to distinguish them from each other when they’re together. They have their own language when they speak, and they always think and act as one person. I can’t remember a time when he hasn’t been apart from her without talking about her, and saying how much he misses her. She’s a smart, funny girl and she loves my brother with all her heart. Together they love each other and God with a fervor that infects everyone around them.

I’ve heard a lot of people say that 19 is too young to get married and that you can’t know anything at that age with surety. But my response is always that I even though they’re young, they are ready and that they will spend the rest of their lives together. I’ve seen them, and they aren’t just some young kids who are all gaga over each other. They are a rock solid couple who set a standard of maturity and love for one another that some couples who have been married 20 years can’t attain. I also like what my Dad said during the ceremony. He said that people have it backwards, because when you get married young, you get to grow up together and do life together. So that when you hit bumps and craters in the road, you have someone else to count on and go through those rough experiences with you.

almost time
just a few minutes before the big event

Another thing I want to mention briefly is how the ceremony was ended. See, my brother and his wife were virgins yesterday, because they both made a commitment to wait until marriage to have sex. My brother signed a covenant to stay sexually pure until marriage, and Victoria had a ring to represent her commitment to the same. So to end the wedding, and celebrate the completion of their commitment, they placed the framed covenant and the ring in a pillowcase and stomped on them.

I am so proud of them for holding out, and I hope to honor my vow to purity in the same manner. I hope that’s not TMI, but I just couldn’t write the post without mentioning how proud I am of them, for their devotion to each other and willingness to wait for marriage. I think that their marriage will be so much stronger for it.

I just can’t believe that the day finally came and flew by. I’m so proud of them, and I hope to one day meet a girl who will complete me in the same way, and spur me on in my relationship with God in the same way that Victoria does for Koury.

Alright, I think that I’ve expended enough emotion this weekend, and I’m also running on about 6 hours of sleep for the past few nights, so I’m gonna go to bed. Hope that wasn’t too sappy, but I’ve never been afraid to be in touch with my feelings ;)
