Running With Music, Not Scissors 18 Jan 07

So school has started, and I’m starting to settle into a rhythm with my schedule. I’ve made it a big goal to cook healthy meals as often as possible, and it’s been paying off thus far. I feel a whole lot better and am running farther everyday. Here’s my progress towards Runagogo thus far:

Jan. 17, 2007

I’m hoping to close in on 20 miles by the end of the weekend!

Warning! There is a lack of blogging material ahead. Author will attempt to fill a post with music instead of pictures and actual content. Please use caution when continuing!

Some people have asked for this, so here’s a list of some of the music I’m grooving to while running these days:

  • Andrew Bird - This guy is amazing. He’s a classically trained violinist turned indie rocker, and his sound is so unique. His music combines violin, whistling and other cool compositions in ways I’ve never heard before. It’s pretty chill and is nice when I’m running longer intervals because it gives me a good pace.
  • Arcade Fire - Another indie fave, I really love the song Crown of Love. The violin and guitar combo at the end is amazing.
  • Muse - This band is my crazy music when I need something to keep me going. Their beats are nice and fat and get pretty frenetic. Good stuff!
  • Okkervil River - Very dark and brooding, yet so expansive and complex. This band is like a very stout beer or a piece of bittersweet chocolate. It’s kick you in the crotch good.
  • Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin - Just as funky as the name, this another great band that keeps me going and helps me focus on something other than my aches.
  • Starflyer 59 - One of my long time favorites, I can always count on Starflyer to give me something fun and catchy to workout to.
  • U2 - My all-time favorite band, I can always count on Bono to inspire me and make me feel like I’m running for the good of humanity.

Those are some of my favorites, albeit some esoteric ones. What do you like listening to? And don’t worry, I’ll still talk to you if you say Justin Timberlake. Well, maybe.

    OK,

I’ll be the first! Way to go on the exercise and diet. Why don’t you come over and cook your parents one of those healthy meals!!! As far as the music goes, the only one I’ve heard about is U2. We both know that you wouldn’t listen to any music I’d recommend, so I’ll keep my musical favorites to myself!
Give Emma and Dallas a hug!
    Love Mom

Great job! Isn’t it amazing how much easier it gets?

What gets me motivated are Gwen Stefani and Fergie. It’s a bit embarrassing… but my favorite music really doesn’t get me going. Gwen and Fergie are full of so much energy it rubs off!

congrats on your progress on runagogo! :)

I really need to pick up some Andrew Bird — I keep meaning to, but haven’t! I love Muse and Arcade Fire though. :)

    Ah, I love Andrew Bird!
I don’t really excercise (I commute by bike and go for lots of walkies) so I don’t have excercise music, but it would probably be Death From Above 1979, Gogol Bordello, Korpiklaani (Spirit of The Forest), aaaaand the Scissor Sisters.

Okkervil River is cool! “Black” is such a great song…

First, I must say that I have been enjoying your blog for a while and yet this is my first comment. I can’t even begin to tell you how jealous I am of your yarn dyeing… we must chat more about this offline.

Second, Way to go with the running! I just started running last year and have since run a 5K and average about 12 miles a week. I must say your choice of music is rather interesting, I tend to listen to a lot of techno/dance/trance music. You know something with a heavy beat. Lately it has been a lot of mixes by DJ Irene, occasional Dance mix of Nick LaChey.

I loved the special colorway you made during the holidays. I clicked on it several times before finally saying, “no I just can’t do it” and then the other day I saw it knitted up on somewhere online and it was gorgeous! I couldn’t stop kicking myself! I dropped by your site to let you know I’m sneaking past you in the mileage total for runagogo. I plan on making it to 15 by tomorrow. :-)

Congrats! Since the only excercise I get is playing Dance Dance Revolution, I don’t really have a choice for what music I get, but my favorite band is TOOL, and I also like a lot of other stuff like John Mayer, Imojen Heap, and the Black Eyed Peas. I’m pretty eclectic on my music tastes. Are you going to join Favorite Color Swap 2?
