Enough is Enough 04Jan07

I’m tired of being a fattycakes and it’s time I did something about it.

See, I went skiing on New Years Day, and even though I had a blast, I felt like a Butterball Turkey on skis. I’ve been skiing for 12 years now, and although I’ve never been in the greatest shape, I’ve always felt better than I did this past Monday.

In addition, I have a number of hereditary factors in play that make my risk of heart attack before 30 much higher than a normal person. Combined with my very high blood pressure, these risks mean that if I don’t get serious about my health I could be in a lot of trouble down the road. So I figured it’s high time to do something about it.

Inspired both by Lolly’s amazing weight loss progress and Rachael’s Run-A-Go-Go Challenge, I’ve decided to keep track of my own fitness progress right here on this blog. You can check out my fitness page to view updates on my progress, as well as more specific goals and the steps I’m going to take to achieve them.

Step 1? Sign up for Run-A-Go-Go -> DONE.

Step 2? Sign up for the Gym -> DONE.

Step 3? Actually start exercising -> I’m going this evening, come hell or high water. If I don’t, I’ll abstain from knitting from an entire week. Promise!

This, my dearest readers, is where you come in. I would love nothing more than for you to help me reach my goals. Having my progress charted on the blog will definitely be a kick in the pants to motivate me. Your comments and e-mails will be much appreciated, even if they consist of you yelling at me to go on a run because I’m being a lazy butt. I know I can do this, and I think having this openness with the internets will be just what I need to help me stay on track.

Lastly, if you haven’t signed up for Run-A-Go-Go? It’s not too late! Join all the crazy knitters who’ve pledged to travel 100 miles by April 1. You’ve seen what happens when we raise money, so what happens when we get serious about fitness? Click the button to find out more.

Hi there! I’m another knitter who’s joined Runagogo and I am visiting others’ sites. I love your hand-dyed yarn–very cool. Someday I will learn how to dye…

I lost a LOT of weight in 2006 and would be happy to share some tips if you’re interested (email me, don’t really want to post a lot of the info on blog comments). GO ADAM!!!! :)

Oh, and my biggest surprise, post-weight loss? I now need significantly less yarn to knit a sweater for myself. How’s that for motivation?!!!!!

Good for you, Adam! I read your post on Runagogo and had to stop by for a visit. I’ve got family history of heart disease on both sides of my family and so far I’m the only one who’s managed to avoid it. I’ve never really thought much about how I should not take that for granted, but other things in my life over the past year have made me realize that I should do something now to take care of my health. I gotta go exercise (sadly, nothing that will earn me runagogo miles, but still. . . )!

Whoo hoo!!!!! thanks for the linkage! :)

You can do it! It’s all about making it a habit. I’m making my goal to be able to complete a triathlon this year. I’ll be cheering you along!

Thanks for the encouragement everyone! I went to the gym today and biked 8 miles and ran 0.8 miles, so I’m off to a good start! Plus I just had a healthy dinner, so I’m feeling good!

Encouragement makes a big difference! So, go, Adam!! I don’t know if I’ll come out of the runagogo with any weight loss but I’ll be happy if I just get my cranky bones and joints in a better frame of mind.

You are inspiring me as well! Go Adam!

When I made up my mind to lose weight a few years ago, there was three things I kept telling myself, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, how bad do I want it, and nothing tastes as good as being thin feels. I dunno why but it help me get through the 3:00 munchie attack.Hang in there Bro!

So, what do you listen to while you are doing all this exercising? Pod post please!

Way to go Adam!!! Dad and I are behind you all the way! You can come and run on our treadmill anytime you want…as long as you knit a few rows on my Christmas present after your done! (which looks amazing for those of you who haven’t seen it yet) I bet you could burn some extra calories if you knit really fast! But I wouldn’t recommend that you knit and run at the same time…you might fly off the back of the treadmill!!!
    Love ya~Mom

Thats a great goal! I’ve been working on getting in shape and losing a little weight too. I’m following cool runnings couch to 5k program, and using Spark People (wwww.sparkpeople.com) which is an awesome sight for tracking and good down to earth diet/health info. :)

I think I’ll join Run-A-Go-Go, maybe that will help motivate me more.

Good for you! I’m joining the Runagogo challenge too, and I’m going to be updating my progress once a week on my blog (Running Fridays). Good luck! (You might find a local 5K to sign up for in April - I think races are great motivation.)

    Good luck!
