I’m Leaving On a Jet Plane 01 Dec 06

Update [10 AM]: I’m now booked to leave tomorrow morning, and come back Sunday evening. Barring any further problems I’ll still have the same amount of time in Chicago, and it’s still my birthday, so I’m optimistic! Let’s just hope the snow in Chicago lets up! Thanks for all the birthday wishes!

Don’t know when I’ll be back again. Actually, I do, but I’m just hoping that the song gets stuck in your head like it has been in mine for the past few hours. This is what I get for thinking too hard about post titles.

By the time you read this, I’ll be on a plane to Chicago, ready for a weekend of relaxation, music and knitting. And completely ignoring the fact that my professor just posted a 15 problem homework assignment due Thursday.

And it’s my birthday! Happy Birthday to Me! To celebrate the special day, I’m going to have a contest. The winner will receive a skein of Snow Angels in my 1500 MHz Merino Yarn. I absolutely love this yarn, and the colorway is awesome too. The contest is pretty simple. Guess my age! That’s it, no gimmicks or tricks, just a simple guess. There are previous posts on the blog that would shed light on my approximate age, but I don’t recall ever posting the specific number. If there’s more than one correct guess (which I’m sure there will be), I’ll use a fancy random number generator (close eyes and point) to pick the winner. I’m going to leave the guessing open until Sunday, when I return.

Speaking of leaving, I’m taking a somewhat obscene amount of yarn and knitted goods with me. I have 3 scarves (2 are gifts for Linford and Karin from Over the Rhine), a hat, some fuzzy feet (for those cold hotel floors)…and that’s just the finished objects! Otherwise I have lots of unknitted yarn that’s accompanying me, including a skein of the Snow Angels, since I just have to give one to the band that inspired the colors.

there's more yarn than clothes in my bag!
suitcase full of yarn

I wonder what the TSA screeners will think…I mean, I’m sure they’re prepared for when the Yarn Harlot rolls through town with 9 suitcases of yarn, but they probably don’t see many yarn toting men. I just hope I’m not sitting next to someone too inquisitive on the plane. ;)

Oh yeah, and I found out that I’m staying one block away from Loopy Yarns, how cool is that?

Happy birthday! I guess that you are 24.

I’ve found out that headphones discourage inquisitive people… but I’m anti-social like that. What else can you expect from a CS nerd?

  7. 7 Rosi G.

    I think you’re 22! Dunno where I get that idea from. But it’s either 22 or 23. I go with 22.

  8. 8 Rosemary

Happy Birthday Adam! Hope you make it to Chicago. Sounds like fun! I am pretty sure you are 22, because I know that you are younger than me… :) But you don’t have to add me to the contest if I guessed right because I don’t knit (gasp).

  9. 9 Hazel

I guess 22 years old! Though I am not really guessing, since I won your last competition and I don’t want you to get accused of favouritism! Sorry to hear your flight got cancelled but I hope you have something fun you can do for your birthday at home instead. And we’re almost birthday mates - my birthday is tomorrow! So, happy birthday to you! :)

  10. 10 Carla

  11. 11 Jen

I’ll go with 25 years old assuming you spent four years for your BE, worked a few years before deciding to do your ME. Best wishes and make sure you consume heaps of devilish birthday cake.

happy birthday :) i’m guessing 23. maybe i should have an age-guessing contest when my birthday comes up? sounds like fun! and i could “unload” some stash :) have a safe trip. enjoy chicago. i’m envious of the snow! i saw 2 flurries last year :( ps. i wear headphones when traveling, even if i’m not playing any music, just so the curious don’t feel the need to inquire and chat up a storm!

  31. 31 Dave Daniels

Adam, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! (I’ll guess 23.)

  32. 32 jupiterjessica

Happy Birthday! I’ll guess my age…24. Although something is telling me that you’re 22. :) Have a great time in Chicago!!

  33. 33 Julie

    Hmmm…I will guess 24.

Have a great time at OtR…the Christmas concert never disappoints!!

  34. 34 georgia

hmmmm. you’re old enough to drink beer and you’re in grad school…but you look rather young to me. i’m going with 23. have a great trip and a very happy birthday to you!!!

  35. 35 Not Hip

    I’m guessing 27

  36. 36 moirae/Steph

I would have guessed 27 since you started grad school in August and that’s when I started graduate school. But I have to take it down a bit because your “baby” brother is 18. I’m could have gone with 20 as if you were a bit of a prodigy, because after all you knit! But you seem to have developed a taste in wines. So I’ll go with you turning 23.

    Happy Birthday!

  37. 37 Eva

    Let’s make it nice and round… 30 :) Happy 30th Birthday !!! Cheers Eva

  38. 38 Gwen

Happy Birthday! I guess 28. Probably a bit old, but I think no one else has guessed that yet.

Oh, and thanks for the OtR recommendation. I just downloaded Snow Angels from iTunes. Looking forward to getting to know it better.

  39. 39 Chris

Happy Birthday!! I hope your trip is a blast. Um, let’s see…. 27.

  40. 40 Beth

Happy Birthday! I’m going to guess 29.

  41. 41 LaVerna

If I were just guessing I would say you are old enough to know better and young enough not to care! That’s how old I am anyway…Happy Birthday no one has guessed 21 so I will.

  42. 42 corrie

it’s amusing to me that people think you’re so old when sometimes i still see you as a 17 year old freshman on your first day of college when i was your ra. i’d forget how old you were if i didn’t know you were born the same year as my baby sister, 1984. happy 22nd birthday, adam. and if you see any homeless cheesecake in chicago, you can bring it back for me.

p.s. maybe you can teach me to knit if i win your yarn. ;)

  43. 43 Kat

I’m going to take a stab at it and say 22.. That yarn is beautiful and would give me a good chance to try socks (they scare me!) Hope you’re trip is going well and things on the female front are moving along nicely. :-) Talk to you later

  44. 44 Nicole

I’m going with 22 - it seems like about the right age for somebody who graduated recently. I hope you’re older, though, because I don’t really want to face the idea that my parents might move anytime soon.

  45. 45 karrie

I am going to guess that you are 23. Have a great trip!

  46. 46 Jody

    Happy Birthday!

    Just cause - it’s my age too - I’ll go for 30 :)

  47. 47 DPUTiger

I’ll guess 24. I got my yarn today. LOVE IT! Hubster guessed that “froot loops” was Lucky Charms, so he wasn’t far off. Can’t wait to get my life back from the job so I can get knitting on this stuff (oh, and your labels are tooo much fun!) :)
