Full of Hot Air and Flying High 06 Oct 06

Comments

I never got around to taking any pictures for Yarn Pr0n Friday, so I figured I’d take a week off and write about one of my favorite events this time of year…The Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta! Since I’ve grown up in Albuquerque, it’s easy for me to take our beautiful views and unique culture for granted, but once a year the Balloon Fiesta comes along and reminds me just how much I love living here. It’s just so cool to drive to work in the morning and see hundreds of hot air balloons flying over the city, it’s really an amazing sight.

hey, how's it going?

And last year, I got a very unique take on the Balloon Fiesta, as I got to fly in a balloon! I have a friend whose Dad works for one of the major campgrounds that a lot of the balloonists stay at, and as such he usually gets the opportunity to crew for a balloon every year. Last year he invited me to come out and help crew with his team, since they were running low on warm bodies.

I figured “what the heck?” and dragged myself out of bed at the butt crack of dawn a few times that week, and I had a total blast. We were crewing for two married pilots, each with their own balloons, named A Change of Pace and Five Dollars. We got to unpack the balloons, lay them out and get them inflated. Then once the balloon is filled with cold air, you fire up the burners and watch it start to ascend. It’s not an easy task to get it upright, and still hold it down, which is why you need as many people as you can get for weight!

getting it untangled taking in cold air
yup, that’s me on the right!

So it was a total blast to crew, and just see how the process of getting a balloon in the air works, but it gets even better. On the second day, during mass ascension, we were holding down the balloon, and the pilot said, “we’re a little light, we need one more small person to hop in”, which turned out to be me! So I was hoisted into the basket and up we went! It was a phenomenal experience. I had always thought as a kid that it would be terrifying to be up so high in a little wicker basket. But it’s not the least bit scary, it really feels like you’re just walking on air. It’s so smooth and gentle, and so beautiful that you never even think about how high up you are. The only sad thing was that I didn’t have my camera in my pocket at the time I was asked to hop in, so I didn’t get any aerial shots. But it was still amazing!

Definitely an experience for the memory books. So now when I look out at all the balloons taking flight over Abq this week I remember how amazing the Balloon Fiesta really is, and thank God that I live in such a wonderful city, where we can look at balloons and mountains from our front yards. *How’s that for Eye Candy?*

Hobbit Feet 05 Oct 06

In honor of Socktoberfest 2006, here’s my history of sock knitting! And there’s lots more sock fun to come this month, as I pretty much always have a pair on the needles!

When did you start making socks? Did you teach yourself or were you taught by a friend or relative?

I started knitting socks back in March of 2006. I was at Village Wools one Saturday and both Scout and Noelle were there. (I think that was the first time I met Noelle come to think of it!) I said something about wanting to tackle socks next, and they both turned me onto the Fuzzy Feet pattern from Knitty. It looked like a great way to learn how to make a sock without the whole tiny needles and small yarn thing. So I braved the whole DPN thing and dove right in. I made one pair, and then one more for my brother, since he loved them so much! I still have my original pair, and wear them around the house all the time, they’re so comfy.

What was your first pair? How have they “held up” over time?

My first pair of “real socks” came about a month later, but not without lots of frustration. I used some Jacquard Jawool (the cheapest sock yarn in the LYS, since I was still a poor college student) and #2 Bamboo DPNs. After all my history with swatching, for some reason I decided that gauge didn’t matter for this project. Like so many people, I was in complete denial until the end. My Mom kept saying, “that looks really big…”, but I’d say “nah, it just looks that way on the needles.” Well, when it finally came time to graft the toe, I came to my senses. I had made a sock for a hobbit!

Now I’ve been told by many people that I have hobbit feet, but that’s mostly because of the sheer amount of hair on my feet (I know TMI, but this is why you’ll never see my naked feet on this blog. :-P), not because of their size. So that sock got frogged. And then, as if one huge gauge error wasn’t enough, I thought that the sock would fit better if I used size 0 needles and 60 stitches versus 72. At least that time I only made it through half the sock before realizing I was an idiot. So after frogging 2 socks, I was nearing the breaking point, but decided to try once more. I swatched and measured, and voila! The sock fit! And thus my first pair was born.

As far as wear and tear, they’ve held up pretty well, but there are a few spots on the soles where the yarn is wearing thin. Most of this is from walking on dirty brick floors, but I do prefer working with sport weight sock yarn rather than fingering weight.

socks, yarn and beer = great evening!
celebrating my first pair, finally!

What would you have done differently?

Swatched, most definitely. I have swatched every single project since that first pair. Let that be a lesson to you.

What yarns have you particularly enjoyed?

I’ve used only 3 sock yarns, all with their pros and cons:

  1. Jacquard Jawool: Relatively Inexpensive, Not all that durable, and the nylon seems to wear out which causes glitter like specks
  2. Lion Brand Magic Stripes: Very cheap, but a bit stiff and itchy.
  3. My own Hand-Dyed Superwash Merino: I just started a pair with a skein that I saved for testing (won’t sell it if I don’t like it is my philosophy). It’s very very soft and a nice change from the Lion Brand. And this stuff is my speedy yarn, at 6 stitches / inch on #4’s, socks go pretty fast.

I certainly have plenty in my stash that I need to use up, including a skein of another bargain yarn from the craft store, my yarn from Dye-O-Rama and a skein of Cherry Tree Hill. I’m hoping to maybe shrink down my sock yarn stash during Socktoberfest, cause then I’d just have to restock…possibly with some Socks that Rock. Ahem.

What method do you like for knitting socks? And what heel do you prefer?

I’m definitely in love with magic loop. I used DPN’s for the first pair, but wasn’t a huge fan of the whole 8,000 needles thing. I’m also just started knitting my socks toe-up, and it’s pretty much revolutionized my sock knitting. The whole top-down thing doesn’t do it for me, I really like to knit from the bottom up with a short-row heel.

How many pairs have you made?

Not counting fuzzy feet, I’ve made 3 pairs of socks so far, all for myself. But I’m working on Christmas Socks for the family now, so I’m becoming more philanthropic in my sock knitting. Although it’s difficult to part with knitted objects that require so much time, and are just so comfy!

Well, that’s my sock knitting history, and some information about my feet that you probably never wanted to know! There’ll be lots more sock knitting coming, especially since tomorrow night is the 2 HOUR BATTLESTAR GALACTICA PREMIERE!!! (Can you tell I’m freaking out over this?) Monica? I won’t spill the beans, but you have to hurry up and catch up, since I don’t have anyone else to nerd out with over this show!

And Stephanie? Congratulations on getting married, and at least making it a legally binding heathen union.

Ok, I’ve had way too much coffee and so I’m going to exit with some dignity before I spew out some more exclamation points like an excited fanboy. Ha! Who am I kidding? We’re getting an Apple Store in Albuquerque! The rumor is finally confirmed!!! I’m already promising you that I will be camping out there overnight when it opens, so stay tuned for that sometime in the future. OMG!

(Please forgive me for all the exclamation points, or just club me with a blunt object)

Awww, what an inspirational post title. Ok so anyway, what I’m meaning to say is Congratulations to Lori, who ended the Guess the Project contest with the correct guess! I guess I didn’t stump everyone after all. Darn. But some of you did come very close, and for that you get a smiley face from me :) (Kinda like a gold star, but lots better of course). Anyway, Lori has already picked the skein of Pink Panther that is currently sitting in a tangled ball on my dining room table.

Yeah, long story, but Scout? I know you’re totally busy dyeing 35 skeins for the sock club, and that you have like 30 million orders of that Socktoberfest Yarn, but if you feel compelled to write up those directions for winding that warping board of yours…well I’d volunteer to be your slave helper for dyeing the next month’s worth of sock club yarn. Cause I totally didn’t wind the Pink Panther right, and it definitely didn’t go back on the board right, so it became a giant tangled mess. It’s almost done being wound into a nice little ball, since everytime I walk by it, I weave the ball through the tangled parts just a little bit more. I’m hoping to be done with it sometime before I die, but there is a lot of it. *Hopefully Lori is blessed with patience as much as luck…did you know that this is her 3rd consecutive win on a sock yarn contest?*

Anyway, that’s about it, look for 2 more skeins in the shop soon, and a post about my sock history to kick off my Socktoberfest Knitting!

P.S. I’ll leave Lori’s winning guess up in the comments for a bit so you can see how insane I really am. But here on out, this craziness will now be referred to as The Project That Shall Not Be Named, so adjust your comments and concerns accordingly.

Guess The Project! 02 Oct 06

EDIT (10/03): Ok, I’m going to leave the guessing open until later this evening, and then tomorrow morning I’ll announce the winner! (Hopefully by that time I’ll have wound the yarn hanging in my dining room and put it up in the shop, but you know how that goes…) At this point, no one has hit the nail on the head, but there’s still time! Here’s a subtle hint: 4 of the guesses below would qualify as being “very close” to the right answer. So good afternoon and good luck!

Alright loyal readers, it’s time for my very first blog contest! And the winner gets free yarn! All you have to do is correctly identify the project that I have just cast on for, based on the swatch pictured below. The first commenter to correctly identify the mystery project wins one skein of their choosing from my etsy shop. And I just dyed 3 more skeins last night that will be going up in the shop tomorrow, so there’ll be even more yummy yarns to choose from! Here we go, get your search engines ready!

Once the correct guess is posted, I’ll edit the comment to protect the person whom this knitted object will gifted to for Christmas. The only question I have is, *Am I completely insane for even attempting this?* It’s ok, you can tell me :-P
