A Quickie 30Oct06

Just a few quick notes, since I have a very big and special “Adam’s History in Knitting” post coming up on Wednesday.

  • Having a car with a plastic bumper is fantastic. Especially when you get rear-ended at a stoplight and your car suffers no damage, cause your bumper just pops back into place with no dents. I was very happy about this, especially since I was on my way to buy yarn and if I had to get my car fixed, well that would have shot the yarn budget.
  • The Apple Store Albuquerque opens on Wednesday! An Apple Store and my knitting anniversary on the same day? Needless to say, I will be at said store very early, camping out in the line so that I can receive a free shirt and whatever other swag the generous Apple employees choose to bestow upon us humble Mac users.
  • My parents have closed on their old house, and will close on their new house tomorrow morning. Let the moving fun begin! (Or not…)
  • Remember, there’s still FREE Shipping on all the yarn in the etsy shop through tomorrow! That’s $4.05 you get to keep for yourself!
  • I have restocked on base yarns, and will be spending future evenings in the kitchen with lots of scientific equipment, creating some very cool new colorways that are floating around in my head.
  • There’s still plenty of knitting going on at my house, but Christmas surprises forbids me from taking pictures. So be warned, November might be filled with posts of dog pictures, rather than knitting pictures. Please forgive me in advance.

That’s it for now, I gotta make like an atom and split! (Hahahahahaha, I’m so funny! I can’t stop laughing!…Please, beat me now)

The World Can Wait…But I Can’t! 26Oct06

Someone pinch me. Seriously, I really think I’m dreaming. I keep checking my e-mail inbox, just to make sure that 2 very special e-mails are still there, and that what they promise is in fact real. What 2 e-mails could possibly have me so worked up you say? Well, one is a confirmation for a flight to Chicago, and one is a confirmation for a ticket to the Over The Rhine concert in said city in early December.

While this may seem somewhat inconsequential to you, I promise, this will be a life changing concert. Over The Rhine is one of my favorite bands of all time, and I’ve been trying to go see them for around 4 years now, but it’s never worked out. So when I found out that they were playing in one of my favorite cities on the day after my birthday, well I just had to go. I still have been unable to console my wallet, which is still sitting in the corner sobbing at being violated in such a manner. But who cares?! Cause, (cue music) it’s my birthday and I’ll go if I want to! (end music)

Alright, let’s move onto the knitting content, since that’s what you really came here for. I finished my 2nd pair of Socktoberfest socks, which will be a gift for an un-named family member. Although they are so comfortable that I really want to keep them for myself…so I buried them under lots of yarn, in hopes that I’ll forget about them until Christmas. I made them exactly the same as this pair of socks, so you can check that post for the details. The yarn is my own 2400 MHz Merino Superwash, in a colorway called Steelcut Oats.

christmas socks christmas socks
so squishy, must not keep…

I’m also progressing quickly on the project that shall not be named, especially since it’s been a homework free week. It’s quite nice to have entire evenings to sit at home and knit; too bad that homework gets in the way of that most of the time (who am I kidding? I totally knit instead of doing homework all the time…) I also may have cough cast-on for a Backyard Leaves scarf with some lovely Cascade 220 that I picked up at the new and improved Village Wools. (To all the VW Staff: You guys rock! And the new store is awesome!) I’m really getting bad at starting new projects whilst other ones are on the needles. I used to be so good about finishing something before starting a new project, but that’s eluded me lately.

You know what I just realized too? It’s almost one year since I learned to knit! I can’t remember the exact date, but it was definitely near the beginning of November last year. I’m working on a “Adam’s History in Knitting” post, and there will most likely be some contests, so stay tuned!

I’ll leave you with this lovely picture that I took the other night. My brother and his fiancee were hungry, and this giant bowl of salt-laced, heart exploding delicious beef ramen was what they cooked up. Oh to be young, in love, and have a heart unaffected by salt intake.

kinda looks like the dog food
that’s 3 packages of ramen, with added beef bouillion cubes, in case you wanted to know…so gross!

In case you were wondering, the aforementioned birthday is December 1. Send Yarn.

Warning: Actual Knitting Content 22Oct06

Wow, you get 2 posts for the price of 1 today! I got some batteries for the camera last night and figured some actual knitting content was a bit overdue. Ok, I fess up, I’m really posting right now because I’m procrastinating studying for my Analog Electronics midterm…but we won’t talk about that, so instead, Look, at the knitting!

Getting back on the horse that threw me, I’ve finally caught back up to the point of tragedy in the project that shall not be named. Here’s a purposely blurred picture for your benefit. From this point on, this project will never be taken near food again.

the mystery project, ooo! - 2
just use your imagination…

And it’s still Socktoberfest, so I’m still cranking away on the 2nd of the Steelcut Oats socks. I’m going to have trouble giving these ones away, since they’re so nice and squishy. I don’t actually own any socks made out of decent sock yarn, so these are tempting, but I think I can resist for a while longer.

getting closer
I caught this sock looking at the other socks in the Socktoberfest flickr pool. It’s punishment was severe.

And lastly, in honor of the wonderful art of knitting socks, I’m having a yarn sale! That’s right, until the end of October (and Socktoberfest), I’ll ship your order for free! So go check out adamknits.etsy.com and pick up some sock yarn today!

Ok, I guess I’ll go study now, ugh.

The End of An Era 22Oct06

Well I suppose it’s official, I’m really an adult now. I mean I would have called myself an adult, what with all the recent “coming of age” events in my life, i.e. graduating college, getting a job, going to grad school. But up until this point, I didn’t really feel like one. But along comes another “coming of age” event, and well this one’s a bit different. My parents are moving, and I was up at their house the other night to pick up some stuff and go through the garage sale pile to claim any good stuff. And I had a “Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore” moment.

my parents - all packed up - 3 my parents - all packed up - 1

It’s just such a bizarre feeling to see your parents leave the house you grew up in; and an even more bizarre feeling when your Mom gives you all the stuff that she saved from when you were a kid…like your pinewood derby 3rd place trophy and your baby blanket. I mean, I remember being a kid and seeing my parents go through this, and I never really thought anything of it until now. I’m not sad per se, I’m really happy to see my parents start this new chapter of life in a new house, it’s just very different feeling. I suppose that for so many years, I’ve acted like an adult, but now I realize that I really am one. Now if only I could convince the clerk in the grocery store of this fact…then maybe they wouldn’t have to get the manager to ok my ID when I buy beer.

Women And Quantum Singularities 18Oct06

<begin mid-school "girls are dumb" rant>

So why is it that no matter how hard you try, you can’t get the cutest girl (whom you’ve conveniently sat next to) on the UNM Shuttle to pay attention to you? And then a few hours later, the girl in the KFC drive through (the one who has more mascara than Tammy Faye) flirts with you and gives you a free apple pie? I really wish I could explain these quandaries…but if I could, then men would understand women and I’m pretty sure that a quantum singularity) would appear and swallow the earth.

Suffice to say, the one tactic I most frequently employ to attract the attention of the female species didn’t work. That’s right, busting out the knitting failed me. All I got was a cursory glance at my hands, and then she continued to stare out the window. Did I mention that she was super hot? She was even my height (read: “very short”), and had an advanced biology textbook and a cool scarf. Does she not realize that we’re perfect for each other? How could the knitting fail? I mean, guys who knit are super hot aren’t they? Where was Emma when I needed her? Ugh. Girls are so confusing.

<end mid-school "girls are dumb" rant>

But you know what makes me feel better (and super hot)? My new shoes! That’s right, I went down to the friendly neighborhood department store and bought some cool shoes last night. They’re these Skechers clog type things, and they show off my socks superbly. Pictures at some point, when I actually remember to buy some AA batteries for the camera. And the funniest part? When the suit sales guy wandered over to complain to the shoes guys about not having any customers, and he looks at my denim stripe socks and says, “Young Man, what the hell are those on your feet?”

EDIT (10/19):

  • Here’s my swank new shoes, which I got for only $40. Pretty good eh?

  • And thanks for all the nice comments regarding the “girls are dumb” rant, you’ve all made my day just that much better, so thanks :)
