Instead, I lay them out carefully on a table. I make sure that the "tops" are all facing the same way (i.e., no twists between the subskeins) and then I find the top end and pull carefully. I do a fair bit of helping as I pull the yarn from the subskeins, making sure that the strands separate and that I'm not pulling too fast to cause more tangles. I watch very carefully.
