Lifestyles of the Young and Geeky 12Jul06

The house is getting very very close to being completely finished and unpacked. Mostly all that’s left is organization, hanging all the pictures and posters, and clearing out the remaining stuff in the garage. I’m so happy that it’s finally almost done, that you get the privilege of a mini tour, yay! And when the whole house is done, I’ll take lots of pictures and put them up so everyone can see what a sweet house it really is. But without further ado, may I present my office/study/guest room/future knitting cove:

gotta love the big desk dual mac action

As you can see, I have no shortage of computers, although that older iMac doesn’t currently work, but it will soon. Now why do I need both computers? I really have no justification, I just like to hold on to them forever. This iMac could be very valuable someday, you never know. (Ok, I just can’t bring myself to get rid of it, no matter how old and slow it is.)

And looking to the left, what is it we have here? Is it a spot for yarn, an actual stash of yarn??? Who knew! I’m actually starting to accumulate something! It’s definitely not much compared to plenty of other knitting psychopaths bloggers, but it’s a start. And I got sweet fabric bins to show it off in :)

knitting central hopefully someday it will outgrow these bins

Knitting is progressing well too, I’m nearly done with the sock from Scout’s Smore’s yarn, and then I think I’m going to make some mittens and the other sock of course. I rented the first 2 seasons of The 4400 (which is so amazing it blows my mind like every round on the sock), so that’s given me lots of entertainment to knit by.

Anyway, that’s about it…I think I’m going to make out a list of all the nooks and crannies I get to clean on my day off this Friday before going to bed :-P.

Ah, Cultural Diversity 10Jul06

Seen in an e-mail today:

You are invited to attend an Asian Leadership & Outreach Committee sponsored Summer Student Luncheon

Caterer: Panda Express

I almost spewed coffee everywhere when I read that one. That’s like having a Mexican Student Luncheon and serving Taco Bell. Hmmm, I wonder what the Chinese and Japanese equivalents of “gringo” are?

Anyway, funny work e-mails aside, and onto…well not much really. I had a nice weekend, getting in some knitting, amongst all the other house chores. I finally decided to do something about the gigantic bermuda tumor grass growing in my front and back yard. So I commissioned (cough, paid off) my little brother to help me lug my parent’s 4×4 offroading mower (seriously, this thing is like a tank with blades) into the car and down to my house to mow the tumor, I mean grass. Well the grass was still wet from all the rain, and man did that make things difficult. The mower stalled around every 5 seconds (this grass was freaking tall), and we emptied the bag around 15,000 times, but finally it was done and the grass was mowed. Who knew it was possible to have so much “fun” on a Sunday afternoon?

Also, Dallas is now a eunuch, in case you wanted to know. He got snipped on Friday, and is doing very well. It’s always sad to take your dog to have their manhood removed, but it’s for the best, as I don’t want him running around town becoming a deadbeat dad.

Finally, I finished a second cherry/silver 80s beanie, and have started a second baby hat. I’m hoping to grow some extra arms so that I can become a one man knitting machine for this craft fair, but that hasn’t worked out too well yet. Maybe I can teach the dogs to knit…then I’d really be cooking.

Love at First Knit 06Jul06

Ok, I have a new online crush. It happened today, while I was checking out the new summer issue of Knitty. I was just minding my business, reading all the fun patterns, and I scrolled to the bottom of the Carpathia Gloves Pattern and read the author’s bio. And I became smitten head over heels.

An Electrical Engineer who knits??? And has red hair??? (For those of you who don’t know, I’ve had red hair envy all my life. For a 5-6 year period I actually dyed my hair red with henna, and no one was ever the wiser that it wasn’t natural.) Anyway, I’m definitely in love. And a quick Google search revealed that she even has a pattern in MagKnits too! Quite a talented knitter it appears. And did I mention she’s an Electrical Engineer?

So Sharon, if you’re reading this, don’t be alarmed, but I’ve definitely got a crush on you. It’s just that I hardly ever meet other girls who are Electrical Engineers, let alone ones who knit too. The only question I have is…how do you feel about dogs?

The Boxes Are Multiplying 05Jul06

It seems like no matter how much work I put into unpacking and organizing stuff every night, I never ever make a dent in the boxes sitting in the garage. I really wish I could explain why, but I think it has something to do with some mysterious quantum phenomenon…or it could just be that I’m so OCD that every thing has to be put away perfectly. Ok, so maybe that’s it.

So pretty much the problem is that since I actually live in a house now that I really like, not some ghetto poor student house in Socorro, I find myself wanting to keep things neat, clean and overall tidy. (Much to the chagrin of my brother and our other roommate, who think I’m some kind of neat freak because I vacuum every other night…that’s normal isn’t it?) But no matter how long it takes me, I will persist until all the boxes are gone and I can park my car in the garage.

In other news, not too much exciting is occuring on the knitting front…I’m pretty much just making hats, etc. But it’s keeping me busy and I’m enjoying cranking out some easy breezy stuff, it’s a nice break from intarsia, uber-precise felting, or whatever crazy knitting challenge I usually throw at myself.

And since no post is complete without pictures, I’ll give you some lovely pictures of what I made for dinner earlier this evening. It was really, really good, definitely one to try. It’s Fusilli pasta with Asparagus, Sugar Snap Peas, Avocado, Mint & Basil. It’s a great light summer dish, and isn’t too heavy, but if the ingredients are fresh, man is it good! I would definitely recommend getting the freshest veggies & herbs you can, from say B. Riley Fresh Herbs or any other store in your area that has some very good produce. If you want the recipe, leave a comment or e-mail me.

Knitting + Driving = Finished Object 02Jul06

Sounds like a dangerous equation doesn’t it? Chastise me if you wish, but I know many of you have considered getting some extra work in on your knitting while driving :-P And, I was parked, so there. Actually, I was sitting in a very long line, twice, both waiting to enter and leave the base for the Kirtland Air Show. And since I sat there, completely at a stand still for quite a while, I got a good amount of work done on the pictured beanie. The TaB is only in the picture because I felt that this beanie needed to be pictured with a fellow object of the 80s.

symbols of the 80s

And coincindentally, it came out in Lobo colors without any planning on my part! I’ll have to make myself one later on, but this one is designated for the East Mountain Artists Fair, which Mom and I are planning to enter and hawk some knitted fare. We’re hoping it’ll be a good way to keep us busy with small projects until August, and help us make money to build our ever increasing stashes. Noble cause eh? I like to think so.

Anyway, that’s about all I have, I’m working on a 2nd beanie now that has a silver brim and cherry body, then I’m planning to make more beanies, baby hats, and whatever else I can think of that’s quick and has selling potential. Any fun ideas?

And if you must knit and drive, make sure you’re not going more than like 1.2 MPH for only a few seconds at a time, OK? I’m not going to be responsible for you totalling your car while trying to eat food, talk on the cell phone, shift gears and now knit, all at the same time.
