Sam here. As a fellow supernerd, I would say that the nerdiest way to add an engineering paper-looking background would be to create it using gnuplot (see http://www.gnuplot.info/docs/gnuplot.html#grid for more info). If it’s gnu, it’s got to be nerdy.
