Engineering Some Yarn 20May06

It seems I’ve been bitten by the dyeing bug. After last night’s loosey goosey foray into the world of Koolaid dyeing, I’ve decided that Koolaid and vinegar smell gross, and that I’m going to use my 2 years of chemistry to good use with some acid dyes. And of course, not being able to do anything half-heartedly, I spent a few hours this afternoon writing meticulous notes, wrapping yarn around 2 chairs exactly 22 feet apart and tying off various sections. What is this madness?

You’ll have to wait and see, because I must, sadly, put the yarn aside to soak while I go attend a graduation party. But when I return, I assure you, there will be a large mess in the kitchen, and soon after I will have the nerdiest yarn ever dyed. Yes that’s right, this colorway is inspired by geeky things. You’re going to have to wait and see, but I’m sure this yarn will be the envy of all the Electrical Engineers all over the world.

“Dyeing” for a hint? (Sorry, that was really bad). Just think of these 2 simple words: Power Dissipation.

Dyeing 101 20May06

Since the Dye-O-Rama deadline approaches nearer everyday, I decided that it was time to start working on schooling myself in the art of yarn dyeing. So I headed over to my friendly local yarn store to pick up the necessary supplies. I got some powdered acid dye, some white superwash sock yarn and stopped to pick up some koolaid on the way home.

After going through some of the tutorials on the Dye-O-Rama blog, I decided to start with the koolaid first. I picked up Grape, Cherry and Orange and went to town. After soaking a small hank of yarn in water and vinegar, I put it in a glass container and soaked the tied off sections with the dye. Well, there was quite a bit of pooling of the 3 colors, which turned the final product fairly brown. I like some sections of it, and some of the colors that came out I’m not so wild about. But I learned a lot about separating out the sections of yarn, so I think it will come out a lot better next time.

Here’s a couple of pictures, and if you want to see the rest, check out the set in my flickr photostream.

Knitting Right Along 20May06

We’re going for a double header at this very late hour, so here’s so knitting updates that I’ve been meaning to put up.

I just received my Smores yarn from Scout, and I am completely in love with it. I made a small swatch to determine the appropriate gauge for socks, and it looks really great. I can’t wait to start working with it. :)

Also, I’m finishing up my 2nd sock for my pair of ribbed Thuja socks, from Knitty. I really like this pattern and will probably use it to make myself N pairs of nice socks for keeping my feet warm and wearing to work with fancy shoes. And I have a few family members requesting some socks of their own. ;)

Also, my Mom is finished with the bag portion of her Garden Party Bag, and it looks awesome! We felted it the other night, and it’s so fuzzy! It’s going to look super sweet with all the flowers and the cool handles she ordered. I think she may even end up getting orders from the rest of the master gardeners, because they’ll all want one of their own!

And what post is complete without a picture of Emma? Here she is getting ready to walk a course in Agility class this past week. We’re really digging the agility thing: she’s having a blast, and so am I!

ready to hit the teeter-totter

I think that about rounds off the updates for me, and it’s late, so I’m going to hit the hay. Also, the blog’s theme is getting closer everyday to what I have in my head, and I’m pretty much done, save for a bunch of minor stylesheet tweaks. I have yet to test it on Internet Explorer/Windows, so if there’s major problems, leave a comment so I can fix them promptly.

Good Night!

Dye-o-Meme-a-Rama! 17May06

So I’ve been a slacker and I was looking through my e-mails and realized that I hadn’t posted the Dye-O-Rama Meme yet! Oops! I suppose in all the confusion I completely forgot that I get to start teaching myself some yarn dyeing skills soon, so I can send someone some sweet hand-dyed yarn. I think I’m going to use my day off this Friday to spend some time at Village Wools stocking up on the necessary tools and mess making equipment.

Anyway, the meme’s kinda long, so continue on if you dare…Muhahaha!

I’m a College Graduate! 14May06

Woo-Hoo! I’m now an official college graduate with a diploma and everything! I couldn’t be happier :)

The ceremony was pretty good, despite it being very warm outside in the sun, and all the incessant rambling that our school president did. But I got a diploma, saw my family and friends and ate Green Chile Cheeseburgers at the Owl Cafe in San Antonio, so it was definitely a great day. (I think that’s the thing I’ll miss most about Soccoro…the burgers and G.C. Cheese fries there are amazing).

EDIT (5/16): Here’s some pictures from the ceremony, and you can check the rest out here.

it's my turn!!! last day in socorro, much rejoicing insues

I keep waiting to wake up from this dream and find myself as a Freshman again, but that hasn’t happened yet, so I’ll take it.
