Moving in Progress 31May06

Well, what the heck? Let’s move the server now! I’m not only attempting to move into a new house next week, but I’m also going to move servers too. I might as well, and I’m bored, so I took the plunge.

Ergo, the blog may not be available for a few days, but that’s probably quite normal. I’m going to stop posting to the Yahoo site after this, and import the current blog into my new installation at DreamHost. But I’m sure by Sunday when I return from a wedding in lovely NE, things will all be ironed out.

Until then, I bid you adieu for a few days! When I return I’ll have a new house, a new hosting service and updates on secret projects :) Try to handle the intense anticipation.

Housekeeping 30May06

Just a quick note to say that I’ve tweaked the stylesheet, and most of the display issues with IE on Windows should be fixed now.

Leave a comment if they’re not, or you notice anything wonky.

Also, I’m switching hosting services soon, so if the blog goes down for a day or so, it’s because the DNS is changing over…nothing to worry about.

Neon Rave Yarn! 29May06

Government jobs are very nice. Almost everyone in my department decided to take this past Friday off, which meant that I had no one to escort me, so I got to have a very nice 4 day weekend…which means that I got to have some dyeing fun!

On Friday I decided what colors I wanted to do for my Dye-O-Rama Pal, and went to VW to pick up the necessary dyes. Then on Saturday I got all the equipment to make the warping board described over on Amy’s blog, Needles & Hooks. I like Scout’s board, but was looking for something with a little more flexibility, and the peg board idea is simply genious!

So with all the supplies bought, I was ready to start testing out my color ideas. I mixed concentrates of all the dyes, and stored them in mason jars for easy use later. I won’t say too much about the testing, since when I sent my “anonymous e-mail” to my dyeing pal, it wasn’t really anonymous. She promised that she had forgotten my identity ;), but I still want things to be a surprise.

Anyway, my results weren’t too happy, because I didn’t dilute the concentrates enough, and that yellowish color is not what it’s supposed to be at all. So I’m going to do some more tests and determine the proper dilutions and then I think I’ll be all set to dye the final product!

Anyway, just wanted to give an update on my dyeing progress over the weekend. And I just received an e-mail today saying that my yarn is on the way, so I’m excited!

As far as knitting goes, I do have progress in that area, but I can’t reveal it to you quite yet. It’s a secret project involving people who read this blog, so I can’t reveal the secret yet, but I promise, it will be unveiled soon. I’m driving to NE with a group on Thursday for a friend’s wedding, so I should get a fair amount of work on this super secret project done. So look for the revelation early next week. Have a good one!

My Other Hobby 27May06

So I do other things besides knitting. You knew that right? Well if you didn’t, consider yourself educated. These mysterious other hobbies that occasionally I have time for include cooking, dog agility (you knew that one), playing the violin (betcha’ didn’t know that one!), playing with robots and μcontrollers and drinking coffee.

Well last night I indulged in one of my favorites: cooking. I really love to cook, but I don’t get too much time with my crazy student schedule. Well now that I’ve finished school and things are settling down (for the summer only I suppose), I’m planning to get a lot more cooking in. Especially when I move, in the short period of only one week! But last night I got to indulge myself a bit.

Since it’s gardening season, Mom stays out in the garden until the sun goes down, and she often tries to convince me to make dinner ;) Last night, it was just Mom, Dad and I, so I went out shopping and bought all the stuff for a great meal. Here’s what we had (in bulleted format of course!):

  • Maple-Dijon Salmon smoked on Cedar Planks
If you’ve never tried cedar plank Salmon, you should, it’s amazing. You can buy the planks at Whole Foods, and reuse them a few times, so it’s worth it. And the Salmon comes out so perfect, and tastes amazing.
  • Roasted Red Potatoes with Rosemary and Honey
I love to drizzle the potatoes with some olive oil, honey and rosemary before roasting, it gives great flavor.
  • Steamed Sugar Snap Peas with Mint
These were so crisp and tender, and the mint gives them such a nice cool summer flavor.
  • Mixed Greens with Tangy Citrus Dressing
I like just to take some greens, like spinach, arugula and radicchio, and drizzle them with this dressing, which contains orange juice, white wine vinegar, olive oil and shallots. It’s a great tasting salad, with the tangy dressing complementing the bitter peppery flavor of the greens.
  • Strawberry Tart
This yummy tart has a homemade crust, with creamcheese spread and fresh red strawberries on top. (salivating.)

So I took some pictures of the dessert, but didn’t think to take pics of the rest of the food because I was so busy. Here’s a shot of the finished tart, doesn’t it look delicious? (let me assure you, it was.)

So as summer marches along, and I cook a lot more…expect some more cooking posts, and plenty of pictures!

The Mystery Revealed! 21May06

Alright, after making quite a mess in the late hours last night, I have some sweet yarn to show off! May I offically present my first self-striping colorway, named:

3.6 kΩ Resistor!
For the un-EE’s out there, you can check out this link on resistor color coding. A resistor is an electrical device that basically limits or controls the flow of current in a circuit, kinda of like a pipe with rocks in it to slow down water. And since they’re small, and look all alike, they put color bands on them so you can figure out the actual value of resistance, measured in Ω’s. You can see the colors that inspired the name, and the colors I striped the yarn with in this photo:

Overall the yarn came out pretty good. I used Jacquard Ecru for the cream color, which didn’t exactly turn out like I wanted. And I got a bit of color cross over on the ecru, because it took any accidental touches of the other dark colors very easily. But it looks pretty cool, and I think it’ll make a nice pair of socks. Now I just need to make a warping board, so it’s not such an arduous process next time. (You should have seen it, it took like an hour to get it untangled…I didn’t tie it off too well so it got very tangled.) Here’s a few pictures of the yarn lounging out in the garden.

don’t laugh at the raffia, I don’t know how to do one of those twisted skein things.

Also, there’s 2 new sets on my flickr photostream: 3.6 kΩ Yarn! and garden season 2006, so go check them out!

Next in my dyeing future will be to make some sweet yarn for my Dye-O-Rama Pal, and then I’m dreaming of a new colorway, called Printed Circuit Board. :)
