Star Wars and Crushed Cars 28Mar06

Today is really not turning out to be a very good day…

So this morning on my way to work, I stopped at Satellite Coffee across from UNM to get myself a Triple Americano. Well there’s a movie shooting at the Satellite, and they’ve blocked off the street with all the parking, so I say, “no problem, I’ll just go to the alley on the side of the coffee shop.” Well I find a parking spot, go inside, just before they’re getting ready to kick people out to start shooting the movie, and get my coffee. All is going well, I get back in my car, and start to back out…and CRUNCH!

I look to my right to see that I have backed the side of my car right into a giant power pole that was between two parking spots. I hadn’t noticed it because it was in my blind spot, and someone was waiting for my space so I was trying to leave quickly. Well I get out to assess the damage, and ouch! I ripped off my driver’s side mirror, and smashed in the door so bad that the window won’t roll down all the way.

So yeah, this really sucks. I have to leave for Socorro to go to class soon, and I’m really not sure what I’m going to do about my mirror, because it’s hanging by a wire right now. All I need is another insurance claim for catastrophic auto damage (the last one was for a hail storm that caused $12,000 damage to my wonderful VW Beetle).

Ugh. I hope today gets a little bit better. :(

PS: Oh, I forgot to mention that the movie that they were shooting (which caused me to have to park in the alley by the pole), and which I would love to pin the blame on, is called Fanboys. It’s about some Star Wars nerds who try to break into Skywalker Ranch to see footage of an unreleased Star Wars movie. Now I dislike Star Wars nerds all the much more.

DPN’s are Sharp 27Mar06

So I was in the shop the other day and Scout helped me pick out some cool black/white/gray self-striping sock yarn, so that I could make my first pair of socks :) I started them last night, using this pattern that I found, except I made it a little bigger…but tonight while knitting I realized that I cast-on entirely too many stitches and the cuff of the sock was enormous. So I frogged that bad boy.

Oh well, now I have a better idea of the actual workings of a sock. In other news on the sock front, I got some slick bamboo DPN’s, but man are these puppies sharp! I keep poking my palm with them, and it’s getting a bit sore. Does anyone have any tips for working with poky DPNs and socks? If you do, be sure to leave a comment, cause I’d love to figure some solution out :)

I’m not getting in too much knitting these past few days, partly because of Tetris, but mostly because I’ve been crazy busy these days. I’m trying to get everything all prepared for graduation (only 6 more weeks!!!) and that’s quite a chore. I’m practically a regular in the registrar’s office at school, I think they’re getting quite tired of me.

I’m very excited for tomorrow night because Emma starts Beginning Agility class at Acoma. I’ve been waiting for her to turn 1 so she could take this class, and she’s finally ready! I think it’s going to be a lot of fun :) The only hitch is that the class is the same time as SnB, so I guess I won’t be able to attend for the next 6 weeks, but after that I’ll be done with school, so I’ll probably become a regular.

Well I need to go get ready for bed, since I’m pretty exhausted from the day’s events, and watching such a rigorous episode of 24! It’s just getting crazier and crazier every week!

Happy 1st Birthday Emma! 22Mar06

emma's cake and collarI want to start this post by wishing an official Happy Birthday to my wonderful puppy Emma. Except I think she’s not a puppy anymore! Today is her official birthday, but we had a party at dog obedience on Monday night, and I gave her my present then also. Now, I’m sure you’re beginning to think that I’m completely psycho, and let me assure you, that yes, I am a little bit crazy ;)

But it’s a tradition at Acoma Training Center that when your dog has a birthday, you bring a cake from the Three Dog Bakery and have a small little celebration with all the dogs. It’s a lot of fun, and gives us people an excuse to buy our dogs things. The picture here is her cake, and the collar that I knitted for her. It’s knitted in some handpainted merino from Art Yarns that I bought at Village Wools. I just love the colors, because Emma looks great in any kind of red, it’s totally her color. I really love the way the collar came out, and it’s lined and has a snap and a ring for her tags. Very nice if I may say so myself!

And for your further viewing pleasure, photos of the birthday girl herself! Sorry that you can’t see her face very well, she’s very shy and doesn’t like to look at the camera.

So here’s to my wonderful dog, and many more years of her licking me with her ridiculously long tongue.

On another note, I haven’t done too much knitting these past few days because I just bought the new Tetris game for my Nintendo DS, and it is owning my life. I’ve been playing it so much, it’s crazy! I love it because you can play online against people around the world since the DS has wireless internet built into it. And Tetris is pretty much my favorite game of all time, so that has added up to keep me from knitting too much these past couple of days.

I’m hoping to get my brother’s other fuzzy foot done tonight, so that I can felt those for him soon. And then I think I’m going to make myself some bonafied socks. I really want to buy the Carbon Dating color from Blue Moon Fiber Arts, but I don’t really have the money right now, so I think I’ll have to go with some cheap sock yarn for now. But I’ll be starting at Sandia soon, and then I’ll have plenty of money to work on my yarn stash ;)

Crazy Busy! 19Mar06

Man, these past few days have been quite a bit of craziness! I’ve been working, knitting, going to dog class, knitting, spending the weekend at Church, knitting, and so forth. Most of this weekend was spent at my family’s new church, Hoffmantown West, where my Dad has taken a job as the Administrative Pastor. This position was a real blessing for our family, and God’s timing with everything was perfect (can you expect less?). Everyone at Hoffmantown West is so wonderful and welcoming, and we were really blessed to be able to go to all the services and have a meet and greet this weekend. But boy am I tired now!

Besides that, I’ve finished a few knitted items, and will be posting a complete wrap-up of those shenigans soon. Basically I’ve finished the 1st dog collar, which I’ve decided to give to Liberty (one of my Mom’s 3 schnauzers), and made a 2nd one, for Emma, as a birthday gift for her first birthday this Wednesday. I also finished one out of two fuzzy feet for my little brother, as well as a little cozy for my iPod nano, complete with an instarsia voltage follower. It sounds like a lot, but they’re all really small items, so I really haven’t knitted too much in the past few days.

On the previous note, I really can’t believe Emma is going to be one year old already! I know I might sound weird, but she is such a huge part of my life I can’t just ignore occasions such as this, because they’re major milestones for me. I remember last summer when my older schnauzer Grace died, I didn’t think I could ever have such a special bond with another dog, but then along came Emma. :) She is such a wonderful dog, and I’m so blessed to have her as a companion. So here’s to dog birthdays!

So I will hopefully be posting pictures soon (you know me, so add a day or two to that estimate), but for now I’m going to go to bed. I have class in Socorro tomorrow at 8am (bye Spring Break), and am planning to drive in early, but we’ll see if it snows anymore tonight, I might not be able to make it down the hill at 6:30. My heart is breaking as I think about that (dripping sarcasm). So have a good night, and if you’re in Abq, enjoy the snow while it lasts!

So it’s been a few days, and I know I promised pictures, so here’s a mega post that’s full of ‘em. See you after the jump!
